Chapter Fifty-three

Zokman’s hut was located outside the border of Nikjin’s compound, hidden behind trees and tall grasses. It was bigger than the standard-sized huts and had two torches burning on either side of the entrance.

“Do you want me to follow you inside?” Mizzah asked with a shaky voice.

Erin could see that the young woman was terrified of Zokman and she could understand why. “No, Mizzah. You don’t have to come with me. You can go back now, I’ll go inside alone.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. Go on, go back home. I will join you and the others later.”

Mizzah hesitated only a moment before she spun on her heels and hurried away like a scared child.

Alone, Erin inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly. She didn’t know what she was going to say to the shaman but she knew that she needed to choose her words carefully because Zokman would hang on to anything incriminating to use against her when he reunited with his ally. She squared her shoulders and took the first step forward.
