Cassy POV
When I reached Caleb’s office, I realized I made a rash decision when the imposing twenty-five-floor skyrise that Caleb owns showed up in my line of vision.
The last time I came here was three years ago when I tried to appeal to Caleb to change his mind about our divorce.
I could still vividly remember how the guards treated me when I introduced myself as his wife. They looked down on me and accused me of fabricating lies.
Then, I also remembered how they asked me to move aside to let Amanda Hayes pass. At the time, it was common knowledge that Amanda Hayes was Caleb Kingston’s fiancée.
I started to tremble as a sudden feeling of humiliation attacked me.
It was then that I realized I shouldn’t be here.
I was about to turn the car around when suddenly my phone rang, and the caller ID said it was Caleb.
“Sweetheart, where are you?” He asked w
Caleb POVCassy’s surprise when she saw me waiting for her car at the building’s entrance was worth all the trouble I took just to be here.I just concluded a meeting and walked straight to my desk. It was very unusual for me to look at my glass wall to check the traffic below. But a little voice in my head told me to do it. Watching the cars, waiting for the light to turn green, I squinted my eyes when I noticed a familiar car.
Cassy POV“Cassy, come in.”Tony greeted me at the door.I hesitated.“Where’sTory?”I asked, looking around for my best friend.“Iam here,”Tory replied before I heard the sound of her footsteps that became louder as it got near.I smiled after seeing T
Cassy POVI turned around, wanting to see what made Rosalie say something like that, and to my shock, I got face-to-face with Caleb.“What are you doing here?” I asked in surprise when Caleb approached me.“I am inviting my mother to the children’s birthday.” He explained.“It appears we have the same idea as my parents,” I whispered to his ear.The realization left me chuckling, making Rosalie eye me with suspicion.
Cassy POVI ran after my parents after throwing a tentative look on Caleb's way, asking him for understanding. He nodded, and I sprinted off after my father, who was already hot on Mom’s heels.“Ellen, wait for me,” Dad called out while he chased her.I knew Mom heard him, but she did not stop and wait for Dad. I thought she would. When Mom ignored him, Dad quickened his steps until he had overtaken her. A few meters away from her, Dad turned around and blocked Mom’s path.“Get lost!” Mom hissed. Her stony face says a lot about her mood right now.I
Cassy POVUpon reaching home, the kids ran inside, calling out their grandparents. It has sort of become a habit ever since my parents came. They would wait for Caleb to get them off their seats. Then, they would wiggle out of their father's arms and run to the house where their grandparents patiently waited.
Cassy POVThe children giggled, but they didn’t protest. They wallowed in the attention Mom gave them.“Come on, grandma, let’s eat,” Oakley said after a while. She scooted to the edge of the bed, her feet dangling.Dad took her little hands to hold her while she slid down the bed and her feet connected to the floor.“Wax, let’s go!” Oakley turned around and beckoned for her brother to do the same.Joachim followed Oakley. Dad helped him, too. They both ran to the door, trying to open it. They both jumped, hands touching the knob, but since they were not tall enough, they could not turn the knob open.
Cassy POVI watched my parents, and the happiness radiating on their faces was enough to put a smile on my face.“Now, we can eat,” Oakley interjected. Her declaration broke my embracing parents apart.“Sorry, my little darling!” Mom said awkwardly, chucking Oakley on the chin.Oakley giggled and ran to the dinner table with Joachim in tow.The elder Burkes followed them and helped them with their seats while Caleb and I looked on with smiles painted on our faces. Then, I nudged him. “Tell me, how did Dad manage to order the flower arrangement this fast?&rd
Cassy POVUnfortunately, thechildren’splan to spend the weekend with their grandparents did not materialize because Mom and Dad told me they were leaving the next day.“Why? Thekids’birthday is only days away?”I could not hide the disappointment in my voice. The children look forward to having the family on their big day. They
