The old lady was amused by her lie with the way she smiled at Mara and responded sarcastically.

"Oh, I see," she said.

Mara was at a loss instantly and decided to switch to full defensive. She had to first agree to the fact that

she had heard the very same thing, but it made absolutely no sense to her as such superstitious beliefs

do not attract her.

She was a free woman of her own free will and would not be coerced into believing some ancient stories. All along, the old lady had been paying her attention and paused on what she had been doing to listen fully to her speech, for that was what it seemed like to her.

First, she corrected Mara on the fact that she did not believe in superstitions by asking her a simple question. It was a straight one as it was just that had she been told without seeing that werewolves did exist, would she have believed? Mara thought about it briefly.
