“Cassie dear. I'm so happy you're here,” my father said, looking from side to side after I showed up at his door unexpectedly. “Come on in.”

I took my steps in carefully, sucking in a breath to remind myself I needed to remain as calm as possible.

“Sit down,” he said with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. “What would you like to drink?”

“Nothing. Don't worry yourself.” He nodded and sat down facing me. I glanced around the room to ease some of the discomfort I was beginning to feel. “I see you cleaned this place up.”

“Yeah, my…yes I did,” he said. “I'm sorry for your loss.”

We sat in awkward silence for more moments as I tried to gather my thoughts. It had been three days since Davis was discharged from the hospital and the press had been on our necks ever since.
