Chapter 5

Lexie’s POV

My alarm beeps waking me to a new day and hopefully the start of a new career. As I get ready I make sure to take extra time on my appearance wanting to make a good first impression. After seeing the woman at the Country Club yesterday I knew I needed to step up my game so instead of my normal light makeup I went heavier with the eye makeup and my hazel eyes now looked more dominate on the green side making them look catlike.

My hair was a chore in itself and I know now why I never took the time before to curl it out in waves. Thankfully I set my alarm for two hours in advance of the time we needed to leave and as I pulled on the stockings that Emily had left for me to go with her pumps, which were more like stilettos, I could see the whole look I was going for coming together.

Looking in the mirror after sliding my feet into the stilettos, I didn’t recognize the girl looking back at me. The dress hugged my figure leaving none of my curves to the imagination and the stilettos added height and made my legs look like they went on forever. If I don’t get the job offered to me today, I know it wasn’t because of my appearance.

Taking the stairs one by one so that I don’t fall in these shoes and break my leg I see Emily in the kitchen drinking a cup of coffee and eating a slice of toast. She looks up towards me as I came to the bottom of the stairs and the toast fell from her hands and onto her plate as her mouth hung low.

“Is it too much?” I asked her, seeing her reaction.

“Who are you and where is my best friend?” She jokingly asked.

“I can clean up you know.” I said to her teasingly.

“Ah yeah.” She said still in shock.

The door to our side of the house opened and in walked Tyler who thankfully was letting me ride to work with him today. He was looking at something on his phone as he walked to the kitchen and Emily asks him, “Coffee Tyler?”

He looks up at her to answer her question, but his eyes immediately move to me and I swear they darken a few shades making them almost look black. He stood just staring at me like I was on the breakfast menu and I found myself holding my breath not wanting to move from his gaze.

Then Emily appears between us and blocks him from looking at me and I find myself taking in a much needed breath. When I finally regulated my breathing, I heard Emily ask, “Are you sure you don’t want me to take her?”

I heard then Tyler growl at her saying, “I am fine.”

Peaking around Emily I see Tyler standing in front of her with his hands balled into fist and I wonder what is going on. “Tyler.” I say in a soft voice. His eyes move to me, and Emily turns to look at me. “Are we ready to go?” I ask him now having his attention back on me.

“Yes.” He finally says as I walk towards him and Emily steps aside.

“Lexie, call me if you need anything.” Emily says to me, as I step next to Tyler.

“I will. Wish me luck.” I tell her and then Tyler placed his hand on the small of my back and lead me out of the house and to his car, opening the door for me to step in.

Once we were on our way, I looked over at Tyler who’s jaw once again was twitching. “Do you not like the dress?” I ask him.

His jaw twitched even faster and I thought he wasn’t going to answer the question but then he finally says, “A little too much.” I waited for more, but this was Tyler, and I was always only getting short answers from him, that I always found myself reading between the lines.

“Do you think your boss will like it?” I now asked him, self-conscious of the dress now with his and Emily’s reaction.

“My boss?” He asks like he is confused.

“Yes, your boss. Emily said the position that I was applying for was for the owner’s personal assistant.” I tell him and he chuckles, and I wonder what is so funny.

“I am sure he will think the same as me.” Tyler finally says and I wonder if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

The rest of the drive was in silence and I could feel Tyler’s eyes on me here and there throughout the drive, but I kept my eye glued out the window taking in the scenery and trying to take note of the direction he was driving in just in case I was able to afford a car in the future. I started to get confused when we entered the city as Tyler took right and lefts going down one-way streets until he came upon a tall twenty-five story building that read TEC Corporation.

Tyler pulled in front of the building and a valet came to the car and opened the doors for us. “Good morning Mr. Cooper. Hope you had a wonderful weekend.” The valet said to him and Tyler smiles at him and said, “An interesting one.” The valet attendant chuckles and gets in the car and takes off towards what looks like an underground parking lot.

Tyler comes to me and places his hand once again at the small of my back and leads me into the building. His phone then goes off in his pocket and he pulls it out. He looks at me before he answers it and says, “Twenty fifth floor and tell Connie the receptionist that you are here for your interview.” And then he turns and answers his phone.

My heels clicked on the shiny marble floor as I make my way to the elevators among other men and women who look like they were rushing to get to their jobs on time. I waited my turn to enter one of the elevators and took a minute to look around the massive lobby. Windows surround the outskirts of the lobby from floor to ceiling letting in the maximum amount of light and the walls were all painted in a light grey almost white color. The marble floors were white with a touch of different shades of grey in them. The overall appearance gave the place a bright and inviting feel to it.

The elevator dinged and it was my turn to enter and the man by the numbers asked me which floor and I told him the twenty fifth. He looked at me for a few seconds before he hit the button labeled twenty-five. Floor by floor the elevator emptied till I was the last one occupying it. I took a moment and looked in the elevator mirror to make sure my makeup and hair looked okay before the doors open.

Finally, the elevator made it to my floor and when the doors open, I stepped out and was greeted right away by the receptionist. “Can I help you?” The woman asked and I believe this is Connie the one Tyler told me to tell I was here for the interview.

“Lexie Thomas. I have a nine am interview.” I tell her as I stand in front of her desk.

“Yes. I see you in the books for nine am. Please take a seat till he is ready for you.” She said as she pointed to the designer chairs off to the side.

Walking over to take a seat I looked around the room and everything was clean and modern. I started to wonder how I ever landed an interview here just graduating college and realized that Tyler must have pulled some strings to get me this interview.

As I waited, I pulled out my copy of my resume I brought just in case they asked me for one again and started to look over it making sure I had everything. While I was looking over my papers in front of me, I heard the elevator ding but paid no attention to who got off until I heard Connie say, “Mr. Conner your 9am is here.”

My head turned to look to see if I had heard her right. Standing in front of the desk looking my way was Tyler, “Miss Thomas.”
