“Mum,” Mitzie heard the child-like voice call to her. “Mum, I’d like to show you something,” she heard it again. Mitzie’s eyes shot open with a gasp as she hurriedly sat up. She was staring into the face of a beautiful boy who could not have been older than ten. His bright green eyes were smiling at her, and his mop of curly brown hair was softly blowing in a wind that Mitzie could not feel. “Wha…wha…” she stammered glancing at her surroundings. Mitzie’s face softened as she rubbed her stomach with both hands. Alford glanced up at her and gave a small reassuring smile. She began walking forward, then abruptly stopped. “I have no idea where I am or how to get out of here.” Walking up beside her, he chuckled at her look of confusion. He removed one of her hands from her stomach, and laced his fingers with hers. “This way, my love.” He silently led her through multiple winding corridors before they reached an exit. Once they were outside, Mitzie squinched her eyes and placed her hand on her forehead to use as a visor against the sunlight. “Where are we?” she asked visually exploring the desert-looking landscape around them. “This is an abandoned and unmapped military bunker. The earthlings used this space for confidential strategizing.” He said moving them towards the Rolls Royce SUV parked not far from the door they’d exited. Mitzie squinted as her eyes slowly opened. Her head was rested against the back of the seat, and she groaned as she cautiously reached her hand to rub the back of her neck. She quickly assessed the environment feeling anxiety creep through her like torrid tendrils. They were surrounded by towering trees that amply obstructed the sunlight above them. Realization struck her that they had crashed through the guardrail on the highway, and although she was unable to tell where they were or how they’d landed, the vehicle didn’t appear to be damaged. She jolted forward with widened eyes as she shot her head in the direction of the driver’s seat. “Alford! Alford!” she shouted in fear as she hastily unfastened her seatbelt while reaching with her free hand to shake his shoulder. Alford’s head was leaned against the driver’s side window with his eyes closed, but he didn’t appear to be bleeding or injured, and his body slightly jostled as he gave out a small grunt in response to her nudging.

“The tire is changed, and we are on the move again,” Alford huffed as he got back into the SUV. Mitzie rapidly took in her surroundings. “How did you get us out of the tree?” she asked giving Alford a quizzical look. “What tree?” “The tree that we crash landed in.” “No, my love, we didn’t crash. I was able to steer us safely onto the road shoulder when the tire blew out.” “That’s not possible! We were just in a tree, and I was just having a conversation with our not-yet-born teenage son while you were unconscious!” she stated emphatically feeling anxiety beginning to rip through every fiber in her body. Mitzie let out a content groan and smiled as she rubbed her stomach. She then realized that she was no longer in the car and instantly shot up to take in her surroundings. There was complete silence, and a glance towards the floor-to-ceiling windows let her know that it was nighttime. “Alford?” she called again turning her legs to get out of the bed.
