Sequence 8

Desmond's POV

____________________________________________

I got to Clifton city and lodge in a hotel and settle down While I prepared for my exam the next day.

Some hours later I went out to look for an agent because I will be needing an apartment.

I met with one and told him I will be needing a flat, then he took me to look at some apartments.

I found a very nice one, we made necessary arrangements, and the place became mine.

The next day I went for my exam and I saw alot of people that came for the exam as well.

we must have been about 2000 taking the exam and we are told only 800 will be chosen.

We all lined up to submit our registration form and we entered the hall immediately we checked in.

The exam is just like every other security examination and 45 minutes later I submitted and went home.

I took my things out of the hotel and move to my new apartment, I have the place designed to my taste and got everything I will be needing.

Few days later the house is set and well stocked, there are still lot of modifications I need to do to the house but not yet.

Two days ago I got a text that says I'm among the chosen one which I'm very certain of.

The questions are not too hard all thanks to my education in the navy school.

We are told to come to the school to finalize the registration and also be given our I.D card before we can start our training.

I got myself prepared and went to the school, I got to the school and saw the number of us that are chosen.

We were directed to a place for us to get registered and we lined up.

" Your name" the man asked when it got to my turn.

" Michael I. Adams" I answered.

" what's the I stand for?" he asked.

" Ibukun" I replied.

" parent/guardian or any relative? " he asked.

" No one...... I'm an Orphan" I replied and he looked at me.

The man asked for my address and every other things and I told him all the things i fabricated.

After I'm through with that I moved on to the hall and sat down, not long after when everyone has finished their registration then a man came out.

" I welcome and congratulate you all that made it to this stage, but you should know you still have a long way to go.

You should know being a police officer, you have the chance to serve your community in many different ways.

The police officers are the first who respond to an incident such as robbery, domestic violence, or other type of crime.

The first is the policeexam911 which you just passed, the next is for you to undergo series of tests and each of them can disqualify you.

The test is to prove that you have what it takes to do the job, which is physical ability test, medical exam and so on.

And if you passed that as well you will have more phase to go through.

There you will undergo a lot of physical and theoretical training and learn how to use guns and apprehend criminals.

You will receive knowledge about different laws and laws enforcement procedure as well as acquire practical skills in driving and first aid.

Not all of you that is here will finish the training, you may be rejected due to bad performance, while some candidates give up themselves as they find it too difficult to complete.

The duration of the training usually takes about 13 to 19 weeks on average but can last up to six months" the man explained.

" Any Questions?" he asked then a guy raised his hand.

" is it possible to complete the training before the due time?" he asked.

" If your performance is great then you will complete your training in no time but if your performance is not welcoming you will be disqualified" the man explained.

" okay people, that's enough for today, resume training tomorrow" the man said then we all stood up and the left the hall.

____________________________________________

We started the training the next day and it was just as I expected, it's not as hard as the one we did in the Army.

The Army trained harder which might lead to death but here they trained with less hardship.

I took the training seriously and weeks after weeks some people did give up as the man said on our first day.

The captain and some other leaders at the field are starting to notice me.

One day the captain came to meet me and asked if I've ever trained somewhere else before but I denied.

I told him being a police officer is a dream and I'm not letting anything jeopardise It, so I had to train harder.

He told me to keep it up that I will complete my training in no time.

Six(6) months later, we graduated from the academy but not all of us as some were disqualified and we are given award for our performance with me being the number one.

I finished my training before six month but we had to graduate together, through my time in the academy I tried my best not to get too close to anyone.

We've been told that after our training at the academy, in order to become a full-fledged members of the staff, we need to undergo a probation period.

I got my ID card and I went to the national district to be assigned to work, they input my name in the police department record and I was sent to the superintendent office to begin, he goes by the name Bankole Williams.

The next day I got dressed in police uniform then I went to his office with the letter I was given at the national district.

I got to the station and I asked for the superintendent office then I was directed to his office.

I knocked and i was told to entered, I saw the man on his seat and I saluted him.

" you must be the recruit constable assigned to me at the national district" he said.

" yes sir" I said and handed him the letter.

" Micheal I. Adams, right?" he said.

" yes sir" I replied.

" MIA, I like that.......your result at the academy is quite impressive, I've never seen a young officer like you with that.....that's good" he said.

" thank you sir" I replied.

" it says here your shooting practice is excellent and some other training technique which I've never seen before, have you been shooting before or have you ever done any of this before?" he asked.

" No sir.....unless we are to count the ones in video games" I said and he laughed.

" funny.......can you tell me the reason you wanted to become a police officer?" he asked.

" it's my dream to become a police officer, to serve my country in every way I can, to help people in every way I can" I said.

" Good, I can see you're focused and determined.......how I wish the rest could be like you then this Country would have been a great one" he said.

" Never forget the reason you become a police officer, remember your oath and never forget it......do you still remember it?" he asked.

" yes sir" I answered then he brought out a pamphlet and gave it to me.

" read it again" he said.

" I Michael Ibukun Adams solemnly, sincerely and truthfully affirm and declare that I will bear true allegiance to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and that I will truly and faithfully obey all lawful commands of the Government of the federation as by law established and of any officer set over me, whilst I am serving in the office of police officer; and that I will use my best endeavours for the preservation of peace and the apprehension of offender against the peace and that I will in all respect to the best of my skill and knowledge discharge all duties of the office according to law" I read.

" Good, you should never forget that" he said.

" yes sir" I replied.

" you can go to your post now.....i will call for you when you're needed" he said.

" yes sir" I replied.

" Welcome onboard........MIA" he said.

" thank you sir" I said then I left not before saluting him.

Things are getting complicated, it's not as easy as I thought it will be, all the things I'm supposed to do will take longer than expected.

Since I'm on probation period I've been working under the superintendent, I was told the probation will last for another six month.

If I do my job very well it won't take up to that but if I perform poorly it will take longer than that.

I have been the one driving him everywhere he goes, he introduced me to his family.

The man seems to be among the good ones because I haven't seen him with any bad act, though I've been seeing some corrupt officers at the district.

I can't do anything now since I'm still on probation so until I complete my service to the superintendent there's nothing I can do.

Three months later, the superintendent was impressed with everything I did even his family likes me.

So he decided to help me, he sent his report to the national district for me to be assigned to duty.

So instead of six month I used three month in probation and I thanked him for his help and went back to the district.

I was posted to the police station not far from my house.

On my first week at the precinct I was just seating at the station without doing anything much other than to open gate for cars to enter and some other petty things.

This goes on for some weeks and to be truthful, I'm getting bored of this job.....things didn't go as I dreamed.

Maybe my mom was right being here is a mistake, or maybe I have to juice things up a bit.

One day I just got to the station that very morning and I saw some officers about going out and the D.P.O said I should go with them.

I asked the officers what happened and they said they got a report that a robbery just taken place.

I entered the car and we went to the street where the robbery took place, we started asking around for what happened.

" we have no police in this city, when there's trouble we won't see them, police only arrive after the incident" I heard a lady shouting along with some other people and i approached her.

" we are so sorry about that ma'am, but perhaps maybe if you had called they would've got here earlier" I said.

" we called several times, but they told us they don't have fuel in their car and immediately they do they will come......it got to a point that they didn't pick the calls again" another lady said.

" I called and they told me their car was punctured that they can't come, since there's no vulcaniser around" a man said.

" you police are just useless.....all you like is to collect bribe" the first lady said.

" I'm So sorry about that ......i promise we will do something about it" I said.

" that's what you say all the time, the robbers are not even afraid again because they do come at anytime they want" she said then I left them.

After a while we went back to the station and give the report to the D.P.O.

The robbery took place in midnight so i made enquires from those on duty at that moment but they didn't give me any good answer.

About two weeks later, it's my turn to be on nights duty, so in the midnight I sat outside pressing my phone, I went back inside since mosquitos won't let me be.

As I entered I heard the land-line ring and no one was picking up and I wondered what the problem was.

" why are you not picking the call......something might be happening" I asked.

" don't mind them.....let them keep calling......we have told them that we are coming but instead they keep calling" one of the officers said.

" Why aren't you doing anything" I asked again as the call came in again and I picked it.

" hello" I said.

" hello......there's a robbery taking place right now at the street beside me" I heard a lady said.

" what's the name of the street?" I asked.

" Macaulay street..... Please be fast" the lady said.

" okay we are coming right away" I said then dropped the call.

" we have to go.....there's a robbery taking place right now" I said to them and they looked at me like I'm speaking a foreign language.

" why are you all looking at me that way...... Don't you hear what I just said?" I asked.

"it's like you want to die underage, you want us to face armed robbers when we still have our families at home" one of the officers said.

" please My children are still small even me I'm still young, I can't just die like this" another one said.

" you people are unbelievable.......is this the oath you took when you joined the force, how can the government pay you when you don't even do anything at all" I said in disbelief.

" c'mon shut up your mouth, it's not your fault it's because you're an orphan that's why you're talking like this, assuming you have a family you won't be blabbing this rubbish" the first one said.

" look here boy, we are your seniors and we know better than you......so if you want to live long.....you have to do as we do" the head constable said.

" you all are cowards, you're not supposed to be among Nigeria police force" I said.

" I'm going now......and I will see what I can do with or without your help" I said.

" give me the key to one of the cars outside" I asked but they ignored me, I then picked up a gun and went out.

I found a bicycle in the compound so I pick it and rode to the address given to me.

It took me a while before I got there and as I entered the street I saw some people lurking around the house and I went to them.

" what happened?" I asked.

" armed robbers.....they just left not long ago.... We've been calling you police but we didn't see you" the man said.

" which way did they go? " I asked and the man pointed forward.

I climbed back on the bicycle and rode along then I heard someone saying that they are in the next street.

So I paddled faster to the next street and saw them loading things into the van they brought.

I jump down from the bike and hid at a dark corner for me to know how many they are before I engage.

I can only count four outside looking out and I think some are still inside the apartment before them.

They are all heavily armed with guns that are way better than mine, after waiting for a while about five more came out of the apartment carrying a bag.

It's seems there are only nine of them, and now that I'm sure I pulled out my gun and targeted one of them.

I pulled the trigger and I was disappoint as nothing happened, I checked the cartridge and realised that the rubber holding the gun together has been removed.

" oh my God, what kind of thing is this" I thought then quickly took off my clothes and used it to tie the gun together.

I looked up and saw that the robber are about to leave and after I'm done tying the gun I targeted one of them.

As they are about to entered the van I pulled the trigger it hit the guy and he fell down, the rest of them turned back immediately and started shooting.

Luckily for me they didn't seems to know my position so they were shooting at the opposite direction.

Since it's dark and they can't see me I then used it to my advantage and targeted another one and shoot at him and he also went down.

This time around they saw my position and started shooting, I hid behind a wall as they kept shooting continuously.

" Let's Go...let's go,....let's go" I heard one of them shout and they stopped shooting.

I look up and saw them entering their car and I came out of hiding and tried to shoot at their car.

I was disappointed again as I realised there's no more bullet in the gun.

" you got to be kidding" I said to myself then the robber resume shooting as their car drove away.

I ran after them and picked up the gun from one of the two robbers I killed and continue shooting as I ran after them.

I didn't stop shooting after their car and they keep driving away then their car lost balance and somersaulted.

" come out of the car and drop your weapons" I shouted.

I ran towards their car and four of them came out and started shooting, I quickly hid behind a car.

I took a sharp look at them and shot two of them and they also fell down, the remaining two quickly dropped their guns and surrender.

" Kick the guns away from you" I said to them and they did.

" Four dead two surrendered where are the remaining three" I thought.

" the rest of you come out of the car now" I said then one came out from the back bleeding.

I moved to the front of the car and noticed that the one driving the car was dead already but the one beside him was bleeding.

I took him out of the car and dropped him beside the rest and one after the other the people in the neighborhood came out.

Since I didn't bring a car one of the people volunteered and we took the robbers to the station.

At dawn the police station was crowded as the news about a police officer that single-handedly captured robbers surface the net.

The media came to the station to asked some questions and I told them everything that happened including the part of my fellow police officers.

I also told them about the crazy guns in the station, how can we protect the people when we don't have a good equipment.

All the officers that are around at that time were suspended, the only excuse that saved them was that the guns are no good.

I was immediately promoted to the rank of Sergeant, while omitting two ranks which are Lance corporal and corporal.

I was so happy about this cause my plans are starting to take shape, I need this promotion for me to make changes in the police department.

As the people in the neighborhood love me for the work I'm doing, so are some police officer hating me.

Well they shouldn't be in my way or else they will hate me more, I'm not here to gather friends, I'm here to make enemies and I'm ready for them.
