The trap

*LAIN*

I haven't spoken to my wolf for the past five years, and when he suddenly shows up out of nowhere because of this girl, I'm left speechless.

He eliminates all the bad people who wanted to hurt her and have the dark tide on my case thanks to this supposed mate connection.

But I don't believe in it.

Supposedly, the moon goddess paired me off with a girl. Where was she when my family was getting slaughtered by those damned vampires?

Oh, right, she was busy playing matchmaker.

Axel howled when he saw the girl trying to run away. And I couldn't blame him, not many humans knew about our existence, and what she saw here must be driving her crazy.

My wolf ran after her and pounced on her before she got very far.

“Humans are always very slow,” Axel chimed while staring into her terrified eyes.

He snarled at her, and tears rolled down her cheeks.

He didn't intend to make her cry.

Axel got close to her, making her whimper, and she closed her eyes, crying harder.

The poor girl probably thought that Axel was about to eat her, and I didn't even know her name.

“Isn't she beautiful?” Axel asked curiously while watching her.

I rolled my eyes at him, and he did the unthinkable and licked her face like he was her damn puppy.

My eyes widened in shock.

“Axel, no!” I yelled furiously, trying to stop him, but it was already too late.

She slowly opened her eyes, and her lips began to tremble, and for the first time in my life, I felt lost.

He was right about her, she is truly beautiful, but a part of me doesn't want to acknowledge the connection between us.

She's just a weak human, she doesn't even know anything about the mate bond.

Axel began to wag his tail, and this was beyond humiliating.

“Look, she's no longer scared anymore!” He muttered excitedly, making me groan in annoyance.

He was right about something.

She looked a bit better, and her tears had stopped.

She slowly reached out, touching his muzzle with her trembling hand.

“You won't eat me, right?” She asked innocently.

Axel growled in response, and she sighed deeply.

“Who were those people, and why did they want to kill me?”

Axel couldn't talk to her and, moreover, he was furious with me because I tried to kill our mate a few hours ago.

I didn't even know her name, but there's something more profound about her, and that's why the dark tide sent me to kill her.

Galen mentioned that I shouldn't underestimate her because she's not an ordinary girl.

She could be a supernatural being, but she doesn't know it yet.

Axel scanned around the dark alley, and he could sense that more men from the dark tide were coming for us.

They won't give up until both of us are dead.

Axel lowered his head to the ground, signaling her to get on his back.

She looked quite shocked.

“You want to give me a ride?”

Axel huffed angrily. He was getting very impatient.

Once she gets on Axel's back, he starts running towards the forest path to avoid any humans.

“Where are you taking her?”

Axel ignored me as the girl held on tighter to his fur.

He was going to a safe house I created years ago, and not many people know about this place.

It was like I eventually knew that the dark tide would turn on me.

We arrived at the safe house in record time, and the girl got off Axel's back, looking around the small cabin.

I shifted back into my human because Axel had turned into a helpless romantic because of her.

He was useless at the moment.

When she saw me, she immediately covered her eyes, screaming.

“What, are you some pervert?” She asked angrily, making me frown at her.

I scoffed in annoyance.

“You act like you've never seen a naked man before,” I taunted, making her even more furious.

Axel didn't like that because he wanted me to treat her like a princess.

I grabbed the nearest shorts in my hiding place and put them along with a plain white t-shirt.

“You can look now.”

She removed her hands from her face, glaring at me.

I liked her better when she was crying.

It looks like the cocky girl from the club is back.

She poked an accusing finger at my chest.

“Who put you up to this? Was it my fucking aunt and uncle?”

I gave a puzzled look.

What on earth was she yelling about?

“Why did you kidnap me?”

I sighed deeply.

“I was sent to protect you,” I lied.

She narrowed her eyes at me.

“You entered the club with a dagger, and you expect me to believe that?”

I cocked a brow at her.

“First of all, the dagger was for self-defense, in case someone tried to hurt you.”

It was better if I kept her in the dark about why I was really here. It would make things less difficult.

She remained silent, contemplating my words.

Axel was mad because I was lying to her.

She sighed softly, running her fingers through her messy red hair.

She often did that when she was stressed out or having a good time.

“Can you at least tell me who hired you to protect me?”

I didn't even know anything about her.

“I'm sorry, it's strictly confidential, and for your safety, I'm not allowed to say anything.”

She groaned in frustration, stomping on the ground.

There's something about her, and that's why the dark tide won't rest until she's dead. I've never seen a target that made them this restless.

I looked around the cabin searching for the key, and when I finally found it, I unlocked the door.

She walks in, and I turn on the candles.

“What's your name anyway?”

She rolled her eyes at me.

“You're a lousy bodyguard, do you know that?” She taunted.

I ignored her comment.

After a moment of silence, she told me her name.

“Freya.”

“Freya Allan.”

Her phone began ringing, and she fished it out of her pocket, staring at the screen with a frown.

This could be a trap.

“Wait, don't answer--”

She ignores me and places the phone to her ear.

“Hello?”
