Chapter 12

I was abruptly awakened by a commotion emanating from the kitchen, and I immediately recognized the source of the noise. It had to be Eva. I put on my glasses and made my way to the kitchen, curious about what Eva had been up to all day. I couldn't get in touch with her, and she was nowhere to be found. As I walked into the kitchen, I was relieved to see Eva drinking orange juice in her pyjamas, indicating that she had been here all along.

"Eva," I greeted her, and she turned around, her smile not quite reaching her eyes. "Good morning, Avery. Did you have a good day yesterday?" she asked, her voice strained. Something was amiss, and I couldn't put my finger on it.

"Eva, is everything alright?" I inquired, concerned. "Did something happen? Is that why you didn't show up for our sightseeing plans? I've been trying to call you, but you weren't answering your phone." I tried to keep my composure, but my anxiety was starting to get the best of me.
