Chapter 24

After exchanging greetings, the group of people got into the car.

Ol’ Joe was in charge of driving. Elijah, Sally, and Evonne were lined up in the back seat.

It was so quiet in the car, one had to be careful when they were breathing.

Sally looked at Blair through the back view mirror. The boy was still standing by the back entrance of the school. “Joe, you sure it’s okay to just leave him there?”

Ol’ Joe continued driving calmly. “It’s fine. Blair has his means of transport. You don’t need to worry, Madam.”

“Oh.”

Sally nodded. She turned to glance at Elijah, who was reclining on the seat by her left. She was not sure if he had fallen asleep or not. She turned to her right, and there was Evonne, keeping silent.

Evonne gave Sally a surreptitious wink and fished a pen and paper out from her bag.

She scribbled on the paper and handed it to Sally.

Sally frowned. On the paper was Evonne’s messy handwriting: ‘Didn’t you say that your husband’s only blind? Is he mute too?’
