The Event Usher

He looked at himself once again at the rearview mirror once again; his eyes were bloodshot red,  he was literally high and he knew it, but it was his only solution to giving a good performance.

The paparazzi has already crowded his car so he needed to put on sunshades and pull up his hoodie and with the coverage of his well-built bodyguards, he maneuvered his way through the pressing crowd of paparazzi, and camera flashes. He got backstage patiently waiting to get called up.

It wasn’t a long wait since he came in quite late.

It only took his presence and a “what’s up guys? Are you ready to party hard?” to get the crowd going wild, a few blow kisses for the girls, and his signature smile to put them in a full-blown party mood.

The performance went by quickly and he was grateful for every drop of alcohol that was in his system, It always did the magic.

Leaving the restroom after splashing some water on his face after his performance, by now he was completely sober, it was time to treat himself to some good sleep,

As he hurriedly took some pictures with fans who asked for one and tried to exit the building before the crowd increases, he didn’t see the person coming from the opposite direction with a tray of empty glasses and so he bumped into each her and the tray fell off her hand with all its content smashing into the hard floor.

He wanted to apologize even after the content of the glass ruined his favorite Puma tracksuit from David's collection but was surprised to see the waitress checking him out,

“Seriously!!”

He was annoyed but her face was adorable, however, he needed to snap her out of her daydream. “she might have done this on purpose just to get his attention,” he thought and he wasn’t having this; he was already angered by the thought of it and the fact that his favorite tracksuit had a huge stain on it.

“When you’re done checking me out, check the cost of my track suit you just ruin because you’re replacing it,” he said angrily

“I’m sorry,” she said and lower her eyes in embarrassment

“Oga abeg, na mistake” she pleaded

“Mistake kill you there,” he said as he stormed out of the place.

He was done with girls;  they were only fun tools and stress relievers. He was also done with love’ it was part of every growing child’s adolescent phase and now he’s an adult who sees reality as what it is.

The ladies only come for the money and can only offer one thing. Some cling to you like a bad body odor and he doesn’t want one because right now he’s trying to get rid of the one he has.

Affections and emotions are forbidden feelings and LOVE is an imaginative feeling that doesn’t exist for him and he plans on leaving it that way.

She couldn't believe she has spent an entire 10 minutes thinking about the incident.

She released the breath she never knew she was holding and went back to cleaning up the mess.

Guess started leaving the venue, the party was over

Now, it’s time to clear up, take stock, and receive our pay.

“So na you pour wine for Sweet body abi?” Mr Charles the supervisor asked looking pointedly at her.

“You’ll be working as an usher for the next three events that is coming up and I’ll be taking out 20% from your pay per event starting from today,” he

Just when she thought all was going fine, this had to happen.

Anyways even ushering is better than being unemployed and listening to her mum constant nagging, and she’ll have the opportunity to step into places that she in normal circumstances wouldn’t dream of, not to talk of having to meet the high and mighty in the society, celebrities, and wannabes of course.

Let’s not skip the part where you get to see handsome faces of young eligible bachelors and elegant dresses worn by young fashionable ladies that is a sight for soar eyes.

mehn!! that's the only compensation for this corporate degrading job called event ushering.

********

We have been stuck in traffic for the past 30 minutes and she was worried sick that it was getting late her mum is not the best of listeners, she was one to always conclude even before you get started with your explanation.

Omg!!!

“Lya 9’oclock don nack oo, e don be for me today,” she said after checking her wristwatch for the hundredth time that evening after leaving the event place.

“Babe calm down, after all nah hustle we go hustle,” Lya said

She couldn’t stop herself from worrying about how her mum was going to react, unlike Lya who knows how to maneuver her way out of situations like this.

“Owa oo,” they said in unison as the bus came to a halt.

They quickly highlighted or would I say literally jumped down due to the driver’s impatience.

“You dey craze” they screamed the moment our feet touched the ground.

Lagos drivers and conductors can be annoying but that was not the issue for now, neither was Lya’s unfiltered continuous chatter about the new guy she just met wasn’t of great help to her present situation.

What excuse would she give for staying out this late when she finally gets home was the script she was trying to pen down somewhere in my head in order not to say anything that would trigger her mum’s anger.

“Bye Lya”, she hugged Lya as she bid her goodnight, and like a sheep walking into the den of the lion, she walked, repeating her already well-thought-out explanation with every step she took.

The moment she stepped foot into the house, where her mum was, busy calculating her sales for the day with all smiles; she must have made good sales and was in a good mood.

“Good evening ma”, she greeted

“Good evening my dear, how work?”, she replied cheerfully

Fine, she said in surprise. She might have called her mum earlier to inform her about the emergency job she had to attend to immediately after Lya called, but she wasn’t expecting this calm demeanor.

“Hmmm…. this is good,” she thought as she walked into the little compartment they called a room in their small rented apartment, but before she could close the door to the room, she heard someone say;

“No be because I no shout you come think say you fit comeback anytime you like oo”

She didn’t bother to look at who made the statement because it can only come from one person; her mum.

It was too late for banters and she would end up being the loser, so she rather go to bed peacefully. With a tired smile, she closed the door and made her way to the bathroom to take her bath.

As she lay her head on the pillow, and allow her mind to ponder on how her day went, she pledged that her tomorrow would be free of clumsiness.

Fingers crossed as we look forward to how she plans on making her tomorrow better.
