A Big Mistake

The healthy rays of the morning sun, found their way into Sam's large bedroom, going straight for his eyes, the curtains weren’t closed when he fell asleep last night. The brightness of the sun shone brightly in his eyes.

He robbed it slowly with the back of his palm, and then suddenly he gasped on the king-sized bed, his eyes wide open and filled with the same surprise and confusion as yesterday.

When Sam saw where he was, he relaxed himself and covered his face with both of his hands, this was still like a dream to him. He would have gone back to his small apartment if all these didn’t happen all of a sudden.

Until now, he still had little doubts in his heart about this whole turnaround, it was necessary; everything happened too fast, and he was taking the change well.

He was about to get out of bed when his cell phone rang on the bedside table that had a beautiful luxury lamp on it. Sam went over and stared at the caller, it was just a number with no contact name.

Reluctantly, he picked up, and climbed down the bed, heading towards the bathroom, he then paused when he heard a woman’s voice coming from the other end.

“Hello, is this Mr. Samuel Jonathan?” the voice asked, it was sharp and clear.

Sam hesitated for a moment, staring at the big wall clock hanging on one side of his master’s bedroom, it was past eight.

“Yes, I am, what can I do for you?” Sam replied and continued his walk to the bathroom.

“This is your loan officer from First city bank, your loan is due today sir,” the voice responded instantly as if it knows the answer Sam was going to give.

“Loan?” Sam paused at the entrance of the bathroom.

“Yes Mr. Sam, you obtained a loan of a thousand dollars to purchase a gift for a special someone, and it is due today, I hope I’m speaking to the right person Mr. Sam?” the lady’s voice came in sharply again, reminding Sam of the loan he took.

Sam tapped at his forehead with his palm, just a day, and he’d forgotten about the loan he had obtained, in other to buy a gift for Amelia during his proposal, which was supposed to happen today.

This was the length he went to please Amelia, and yet; she allowed another man to take his place all in the name of wealth. Hearing how the loan officer explained it made his heart tighten.

He felt a thud on the side of his chest, the breakup was still very much a fresh and open wound, even though they never had an official breakup moment.

It was something he never imagined, he loved Amelia Bruce too much, and that was the reason for all these crises.

If not for this sudden turn of events, he might have ended up having nothing to pay back, he was down to just $500, and that money would have been history if he had paid the manager for the broken plate.

“Yeah, yeah, this is the right person,”

“Please, we would need you to come to the bank immediately to clear off your loan, so we do not have to involve the authorities,” the female voice warned.

“I’ll be there, give me some minutes,” Sam assured, and the lady hung up immediately.

Instead of getting inside the bathroom, he rushed to the bed and put on his trousers, he couldn’t find his shirt; so he rushed to the wardrobe in the room and swung it open.

There was no time to be surprised, he was expecting nothing less, there were dozens of quality and designer shirts and pants in the wardrobe, as well as expensive suits. He picked a sky-blue buttoned-up shirt and white sneakers, putting them on hastily.

Sam rushed down to the garage, luckily there were navigations around the house, and he saw several bodyguards who bowed their heads low when they saw him, he wasn’t sure how to respond, he was new to all this so he just waved, and placed a grin on his face.

On getting to the garage, this wasn’t like the wardrobe; Sam was wowed at what he was seeing, several luxurious cars were in the garage including a Rolls Royce Phantom and a Lamborgini Aventador.

These were cars that were worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, he glanced around the garage searching for one that could keep his low profile, but there was none. Sam later settled in for a Cadillac, one of the cheapest in the garage.

He told himself he shouldn’t be surprised at the sight of these cars, he got a hundred million dollars in less than a few seconds, that certainly should be enough proof. He wondered when he was going to see this master that claimed to be his elder brother.

Sam drove the Cadillac out of the garage, it wasn’t locked and the key was on the driver’s seat.

He tried to keep his thoughts on the loan and the new things he was experiencing, thinking about Amelia while driving could be dangerous.

Sam got to the bank after almost thirty minutes drive, he had some traffic issues along the way, which was typical of Los Angeles. Walking into the bank, he brushed his blonde with his hands, styling it so it’d look presentable.

“Hi, good morning.” Sam greeted the lady at the counter when he got there, a small forced smile plastered on his face.

“Good morning sir, how may I be of help,” the lady replied, with a bright smile, her red lipstick beautifying her white sets of teeth.

“I’d like to repay a loan I collected,”

“Over there sir,” the lady said, pointing at a woman who was sitting alone with a large desk in front of her at one right corner of the bank.

“Thank you, ma’am,” Sam smiled and walked briskly to the desk as directed.

“Good morning sir, how may I be of help?” the clerk asked with a bright smile, before Sam even reached her desk, she gestured for him to make himself comfortable.

“I’d like to repay a loan, got a call that it was due this morning,”

“Your name and the amount please?” the clerk asked, staring at the monitor in front of her.

“Samuel Jonathan, a thousand dollars,” Sam answered, it felt rather embarrassing to mention his name alongside what he owed.

“It was you I called,” the woman muttered, her smile suddenly fading away from her face.

“Yes, I guess,”

“So how are you paying, card or cash?”

“Card,” Sam said, handing her his card over to the clerk, he glanced around the bank.

There were only a few people in it, it was a cool environment to work in.

“This is an invalid card, Mr. Sam,” the clerk sneered, handing the card over to Sam, who stared at her in confusion.

“You must be mistaken Miss, please check again,” Sam responded, a small hilarious grin appearing on the side of his lips.

How can she say such a thing, there was a hundred million dollars in that card and he saw the alert himself.

The clerk gazed at him, with a frown on her face, she stared at her monitor again and made a few clicks on her mouse and on the keyboard before she spoke again.

“This is an invalid card, Mr. Sam,”

Sam was totally dumbfounded.

But the clerk wasn’t having any of it, she thought he was faking the confusion so she called for the securities.

“I have a hundred million dollars in that card, this is a mistake,” Sam yelled, surprised and confused.

The few people in the bank who heard what he said laughed while some just giggled.

The securities were trying to hold him down when the manager of the bank came to the banking hall and asked what the commotion was about.

“Mr. Sam here is a fraud, sir, he owes the bank a thousand dollars and tries to pay it back with an invalid card,” the clerk explained.

“That’s certainly not true, that card isn’t invalid and there’s more than enough money in it to settle a hundred million times what I owe,” Sam retorted, disregarding the clerk’s report.

The manager frowned at Sam, then suddenly he gazed at him again, and remembered something, the color on his face dropped immediately turning pale…
