She couldn't believe she had mastered the teleportation spell. Without training except for some scraps written in her mother’s journal, she ought to receive a medal for this.

Rain squealed with delight, burying her face in River's chest. "Mama! We did it! We escaped!"

River hugged her daughter back, tears stinging her eyes. The excitement in her erased the terror of Lord Draven's face just moments ago.

River scooped Rain into a hug, burying her face in her daughter's soft hair. Tears pricked her eyes as a combination of relief and exhilaration danced in her. They were free. Finally. After seven long years, they were finally free.

No more De La Mort mansion, no more blood offerings, no more fear. Just them, and the promise of a new beginning.

They reveled in their victory for a moment, laughing and holding each other close. But the satisfactory taste of freedom was short-lived. A gruff voice boomed through the silence.

"Who's there?"
