When Lance finally returned home, he walked into the house a little awkwardly, despite his efforts to look normal. It was still morning and he didn't expect to find anyone at home, but yet, the front door wasn't locked. The TV in the sitting room was also turned on. He grabbed the remote control and turned down the volume, but suddenly, he heard a sound emanate from the direction of the kitchen. Oh, perhaps Mom's taking a day off work, he thought. Turning his steps in that direction, he walked into the kitchen unannounced.
"Morning Mom," he greeted as he went over to the fridge. There was no response and he wondered if she was mad at him for not informing her the previous day that he would stay the night after the "party". But he had told her, had he not? Anyway, for now, he was more focused on getting himself filled with both food and drink after the punishment he had received from Cara. He found a pack of his favourite juice at the far end of the top shelf and pulled it out
The next day, Lance jumped from his bed as early as possible. He had spent most of the night rethinking and regretting the manner he had challenged his mother earlier in the evening. He finally came to the conclusion that it had been crude and unnecessary, so he would wake up early and try to gauge how she felt about it and perhaps apologize before she would be off to work. After brushing his teeth in record time, he jogged down the stairs to the kitchen. Then he remembered that the new girl might be in there with his mother. He certainly didn't want to have any conversation in her presence. But peeping in just to find out if she was there or not wouldn't hurt, would it? With that in mind, he strolled into the kitchen, but he was surprised to find his mother very much alone. Clearly, no one else was up yet, not even Anna."Morning, Mom," he hailed as he approached her. "How was your night? Sleep sound?""Yeah, very much. Thanks," was the lukewarm reply. She didn
*****TWO WEEKS LATER*****They stepped out of the store to meet a considerably aged sun beating a slow retreat. The evening was getting older and night was certainly not far away, but Lance still had no thought of excusing himself. He'd tried twice so far, but Selene still wouldn't allow him help her carry at least one of the grocery bags. He had escorted her here from school after their classes had ended and they'd come in her car since he'd lent his to a close friend who needed to run an urgent errand. But all this time that he had tagged along with her, they'd scarcely said more than just a few words to each other. Even though he'd known the woman for a few months, Lance still didn't find it easy to engage her in conversation. She had a way of switching between formal and informal so markedly that he was always putting extra restraint on the use of his tongue whenever he was around her.
Later that night, Lance spent hours tossing and turning in bed. As far as he knew, his mother was still in the dark about his current standing with Cara. So that was not part of his worries. In fact, he had only two worries. The first and the least pressing was how he'd "stick with" Cara without getting caught. But the second and most pressing was what Cara's last words to him really meant. What on Earth did she mean by "I'll love only the man"? Did that mean that she already loved him or did it mean that she was yet to love him and would only do so on the condition that he must first become a man? If he already had her love, then great! That would mean that he was the most fortunate guy on Earth. But if it meant that he had to earn her love, then he was clearly in for some tough work! So which was it? He could call her and ask, but he was afraid that it would sound stupid and immature. Wasn't a real man supposed to be capable of figuring out something like this? That w
Cara was seated quietly on her couch, legs folded under her and a glass of wine in her hand. The room was well-lighted and she was occupied with staring at the bottle of wine on the table as if she could read her future in the dark-colored liquid encased by the transparent glass of the bottle. Lisa had gone to bed - she had seen to that only minutes ago - so she had no company other than her thoughts. And they were mostly centered on the events of the last 40 hours or so.The morning of the previous day, she had woken up as usual with a broken heart, but by afternoon, she had patched it up temporarily and was ready to move on through the day. When evening came, the biggest blow was made to her bandaged heart when she saw Lance outside that grocery store, but somehow, he had managed to make everything better. Her inner self wagged a threatening finger at her as her mind touched on what they had done at the store and the possibility that they might have been seen. But she shrug
"Hey, honey," Carol called as she beat eggs in a shallow pan."Yeah, Mom," Lance mumbled weakly as he dragged his feet over to his busy mother in the kitchen. She had seen him passing by and was glad at the good timing."Are you free? I need you to take a DVD to someone." She was bustling all around the kitchen as she spoke."Why not just stream it over?", he grumbled."It's a DVD, sweety, not a porn video."He blushed as he recalled when his mother had caught him streaming a leaked porn video with his friend, Dylan."By the way," she continued, now sure of success in breaking down his resistance. "It's just videos of a programme I launched some time ago, so it's too important to be trusted with your software thing.""Come on, Mom," he sighed and rolled his eyes, but she didn't see him."Thanks dear, I'm grateful.""So who's the person?""Oh it's Cara. Sh
Lance woke up the next day feeling weirdly happy and eager. Unlike most mornings, he could remember what he dreamed last night. It was all about Cara, the beautiful woman whom he had a secret crush on. The intensity of this crush increased by leaps and bounds the more he saw her. Today, he was feeling the need to see her again. That need you get when you've had a hurried glimpse or taste of something. Now, he was beginning to wonder if her eyes were blue or green."Hello sleepyhead," his mother hailed as she walked past. "Thought I'd catch you in bed. Breakfast's ready!""Morning, Mom," he murmured as he stepped out of his room. He followed her and went to the sitting room, while she stopped at the dining. There, he slumped down on a sofa and turned on the TV."Won't you eat your breakfast?""In a minute," he called back."What! Get your lazy ass over here, boy. Don't want you lacking those important vitamins."
When Lance woke up, he was sprawled on the bed with no idea of the time. The room was just beginning to get illuminated by the light of dawn and he was buck naked, lying on his back on the queen-sized bed in... not his room for sure. Then the memories of the previous evening rushed into his head. He was in Cara's room. He remembered the marathon sex they had and how they both fell asleep due to sheer exhaustion. But right now, she wasn't at his side and he wasn't surprised. She must have come to her senses and become flooded by guilt, the same guilt he was feeling. Or perhaps it was hate, hatred for him and for what he had done? Would she report him to his mother? Oh, his mother! He jumped off the bed and went in search of his clothes. He found his shirt on Cara's cosmetics kit and both his trousers and boxers near the door. He searched his trouser pockets for his phone as he looked around for his shoes. He found the right leg under the bed and the left one
"Where is he?", Lance asked his friend as he squinted at the small football pitch. "Can't see him.""Over there," Rex said, pointing to a young boy wearing the No. 11 shirt."Oh yeah? He sure looks like Diego Maradona.""A bit taller, though," Rex shrugged as he gulped the rest of his water.Lance laughed at the remark and leaned back to enjoy the game which was just about to begin. They were among other parents, guardians and family members seated in the stands, watching their little men play in the school's football practice match. Lance and Rex had been coaching Rex's little brother, Chase, for weeks and they had promised to drop by to cheer him on and watch him score as many goals as he could."Go get 'em, Chase!", Rex hailed and hooted from the stands as the whistle was blown for kick-off.But trouble began immediately. He and Lance kept their eye on Chase as he tried to fight off an opponent who was trying
