Chapter 30 - Dear mom
Dear Mom, I know it’s been a long time since last we spoke. It’s been fifteen years, after all. Can you imagine that? That’s literally half my life without you. I’m writing to tell you about a few things that happened since we got separated and to get some news from you— I frowned at that last sentence and rolled up the paper so I could use a liquid corrector to remove it. I could write whatever I wished in my letter, but that last bit felt a little silly. When I was done, I blew on the paper to dry the white-out and rolled it back down to where I was so I could continue. I was trying out the antique typewriter Dominic got for me. My life has been hard since the accident. I have horrible nightmares that haunt my sleep, not to mention the mild to slightly intense panic attacks on the odd days when I think too much about you, Kris and Gabby. I thought I was over those, but it seems like I’m not. The truth is… I miss you all. I think I haven’t mourned your deaths properly, and it’s

Chapter 31 - You're mine
I went to the gym and worked out my frustrations there. My feet pounded on the treadmill, and I increased the speed to rein in my anger and anxiety. Whenever I had panic attacks or frustrations, I came there and benched them away. It had become some sort of ritual. I was also sexually frustrated since Dominic had been busy these last few days. I hadn’t seen him since I told him I’d “try” to be more with him. Ever since we started this, I had been lost in Dominicland. Although I couldn’t admit to Dominic about having a stash of vibrators at my disposal, I did have one and used them daily since I couldn’t get my usual Dominic hit. After writing the letter to my mother, I also tried to work out my feelings. It hadn’t been a small thing, and the emotions I had swelled up inside me and made it hard to breathe. This was a big step for me. I didn’t think letting go would be that hard on me, but it was. The letter opened a floodgate of nasty emotions and made me feel vulnerable. Jody had b

Chapter 32 - Pre-wedding jitters
Kat and I were chatting about Lena and Chuck’s upcoming wedding in the kitchen. She had been sweet and a great help with my maid of honour duties and even tagged along when I went to the barn where the wedding would be held to help me with the decorations and last minutes touch. I tried to do as much as possible since Lena was on the other side of the country and couldn’t take a flight each weekend to do it herself. It was her wedding, after all, and I felt like I owed her after everything she and Chuck had done for me. It also kept me busy since my writing motivation was at an all-time low. Plus, I got to spend some lovely time with Kat, which helped me change my mind about everything I had been feeling lately. She was amazing. Kat had understood my need for space, and whenever we would fumble into a topic I didn’t seem too comfortable answering, she would leap onto something else without making a big deal about it. “I don’t understand why you don’t want Nate to come. Lena clearly

Chapter 33 - We all have our issues
Finally, after days, if not weeks, of being unable to edit my first draft, my motivation finally found its way back to me. I didn’t know if it was because I had been so busy making Lena’s wedding a success or because Dominic had been working later than usual and gave me more spare time than I cared to have. Still, I sat at my enormous oak desk that morning, inspired to go through my novel. Dominic hadn’t stayed the night, so I woke up early from my usual nightmare and immediately had the urge to write, and write I did. I had read multiple chapters, re-reading what I had written and altering the story to make it better. The characters felt more real now than they were when I started my journey as a wannabe writer, and for some funny reason, I found I might have been using my latest experience to define my female lead. I was in the zone when the sun rose on the horizon. I eventually stopped typing when I heard Kat welcome her brother inside the house and the door to my room open to Do

Chapter 34 - The wedding part 1
Kat accompanied me to get the car rental. Once we were there, we rolled our luggage the cab driver had dropped for us at the entrance of the rental building and flung them into the sedan we had for the whole wedding weekend. I hated driving on the wrong side of the road. It had taken me months to wrap my head around it and accept that everything I knew about driving in America wasn’t helpful here. I groaned, thinking how much I preferred public transit or taxi cabs. But my preferences didn’t make me any less of a skilful driver. Knowing how to drive was important on whatever side of the world you were in. We still had a few minutes to kill before Lena and Chuck arrived from their flight, so we stopped at a café for a bite to eat. “Does Lena know you rented a room for us?” “Yes. And I’ve also told Lena that other than being outstanding as her maid of honour, I also have the honour of making sure she doesn’t see Chuck until tomorrow when they wed.” I snickered. Kat smiled and huffed

Chapter 35 - The wedding part 2
I thought, perhaps, since Lena would sleep in the same bed as me, I would have a restful night, just like when Dominic stayed with me. Unfortunately, it couldn’t be further from the truth. Nightmares plagued my night, waking me up at every hour with the same recurring scene going through my mind. It was a wonder Lena hadn’t woken up with my whimpering and crying. The final time I came to, I slipped out of bed quietly and grabbed my nightgown before leaving the room I shared with my friend and following the narrow hallway, down the stairs and into the inn lobby. There was a massive fireplace where the roaring flames and crackling noises calmed me. I long looked at the dancing flames, letting the heat flush my cheeks and warm my tired, icy-cold body. I sat there for quite a while before the creaking of the floor alerted me of someone else’s presence, and out of the early morning shadows, I saw Nate coming down the stairs, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. He didn’t see me at first,

Chapter 36 - The wedding part 3
I sipped on my champagne flute, watching Lena and Chuck take their first dance as husband and wife. It was magical. The setting was romantic, with dim lights and white drapes falling from the centre of the wood beam ceiling and tied on posts in the spacious barn. The wedding was intimate. Only thirty people had come—mostly on Chuck’s family side. Then there were a few family and work friends, Kat, Nate, Dominic and me. I was a little further in the back, leaning against a wooden post and watching the scene unfold. Lena was beautiful in her white sleeveless Cinderella dress. She had removed the small fur wrap I had gotten her so she wouldn’t freeze outside. It was nice and warm in the barn, and I understood why this place was highly sought after for events—the location was incredible with the rolling hills under the mountains, which offered a fairytale-like scenery. Lena and Chuck’s wedding pictures would be breathtaking. They had completely rebuilt the barn from the inside. It ma

Chapter 37 - The start of a new chapter
“I thought I should bring you to Alberdeen for our trip. It’s about two hours from here, but there are plenty of things for us to see. With your studies in history and artifacts and your passion for stories, I’m sure you’ll appreciate what I have in store for you.” My hair was sprawled across the pillow when I turned to look at Dominic lying next to me. His skin glistened with a thin sheet of sweat, and he was still lightly panting out of exertion. My mind was in a sex fog-like state, so it took a while before I understood what Dominic was saying, but when it sunk in, I nodded and kissed his shoulder. “Sounds great. I’ve always wondered what the real estate mogul Dominic Moore looked like on vacation. I hope he’s fun.” Dominic rolled his eyes at me and pretended he didn’t hear what I had just said, but he couldn’t entirely cover the smile slowly etching on his lips. “You see me outside of work all the time.” “For short sex visits or business arrangements. We’ve never really spent

Chapter 38 - Accident
Dominic POV Olivia’s kiss still lingered on my lips even though she had left my room hours ago, and simply thinking about it made me grin like an idiot. Our night together was a blur of passion and sex. I couldn’t even remember if we had slept at all. Christ. I never wanted it to end. During the wedding, Olivia looked ravishing in her dress. The silky material clung to every curve of her body. Her breasts peaked behind the fabric each time I glided my fingers down her spine. I remembered how her body reacted to me…. “You coming, mate?” Nate asked as he stood in the doorway of my room. I lifted my eyes from Olivia’s dress, which was spread out on the bed, and shook myself out of my thoughts. I wondered momentarily if I was the only one between Olivia and me to feel this way. I couldn’t be the only one. Every time we touched, fireworks danced under my skin. Certainly, she felt something as well. “Aye. Let me grab everything here, and we can return to the city.” Nate walked inside

Chapter 39 - Bellview General hospital
Dominic POV The wait was excruciating. The seats in the Bellview General Hospital emergency waiting room were hard, and Nate and I made them even more uncomfortable with our tense bodies. We couldn't get comfy no matter how much we moved and repositioned ourselves. The doctors had come and gone, unable to give us any update on Olivia and Katherine’s state other than they were still in surgery, and everything seemed fine for the moment. Nate had returned the rental and went to grab us something to eat while we stayed here, helplessly waiting for someone to come find us and give us some good news, but once we had food in front of us, we couldn’t eat and settled for water and coffee since it seemed the only thing we could take. But that had been hours ago, and my patience was running thin. I groaned and buried my face between my hands. I could feel the tic of my jaw every time I thought of my sister and Olivia. When I imagined the worst, I would get a gut punch feeling that left me b
