CHAPTER 31: DECIET RUNS IN THE FAMILY
Kali moved the grain of rice on her plate with the fork she held. At some point during the excitement of conversations and family banter, she felt incredibly lonely. In the past, dinners with the Madden family were usually tense. She had grown used to the attacks from Giovanna and ridicule from Ysabel. It turned out that she fed off those things to keep her strength. This dinner was different. The disdain was still the same, but no one seemed in a hurry to light a fire. Everyone rather decided to relish in old memories and share tales of their different lives. In thirty minutes, Kali learned about Peter's job at the family office, Ember's years in college, Timothy's inspirations for his paintings and Samuel's work in graphic design. Yes. Everyone talked a lot during this dinner. There was laughter, clinking of champagne flutes, and rounds of cheers. The drinks flowed like milk, the food and the joy appeared endless. Kali was certain she would go mad. Sorely, she wished they’d fight.

CHAPTER 32: LET'S BE FRIENDS, AT MOST
"Do you believe her?""No.""Why?""I feel like the apology was more for your father than anyone else in that room." Kali sighed, shuffling to get comfortable as she adjusted her body beneath his jacket. "Giovanna loves and respects him. She probably sees him as an innocent party in the game she is trying to uncover.""I just hope she doesn't get any ideas and tries something else later.""She might. I am willing to bet she will watch me like a hawk from now on. Probably waiting for a slip that proves she was right all along.""Unless my mother says something, she will never find the proof.   We didn't sign any contracts she can accidentally stumble upon if she wanted to snoop around.""She wouldn't have to snoop for papers. Your mother has a nasty habit of pulling me aside whenever she wants to discuss our little arrangement. I wouldn't be surprised if Giovanna starts hanging behind doors with her ears pressed to the wood."

CHAPTER 33: LOVING IN THE DARK
“Come in.” He called out when he heard a knock at the door. His fingers clicked and clacked over the keyboard.Work was going well, and so were things in his life. After months of feeling like he was being tossed about in a storm, Samuel was finding his footing again. It felt good. He had a few jobs and found himself deep in work.“One second, Roy, I am finishing up with this and…”“It’s me, Samuel.”His head snapped up. “Flora?”“You don’t have a secretary still, it seems. I would have tried to make an appointment.” He indicated that she could enter, and she did. “Then again, if I made an appointment, I am sure you would have found ways to cancel.”Samuel couldn’t argue with that. After he found out about her meeting Kali, he was haunted by the need to see her. The excuses were as deep as the oceans. The reason he never allowed himself to do it

CHAPTER 34: STAND BY MY SIDE
Kali hogged the groceries out of her car and inched up the staircase towards the house. One of the maids came out to help, taking the paper bags and following a bustling Kali into the kitchen. Doing small chores like cooking and going out to buy groceries occupied the times she had little to do in the house or needed something to distract herself. After spending the day job hunting, she decided to stop by the supermarket and buy a few things she was missing from the fridge. It took a while, and she ended up staying longer than planned. So, after helping her get the products to the kitchen and sorting them into their respective areas, the maid said her goodbyes and left for the night. To keep herself entertained, she sat in front of the television while she worked on a few pending projects she had from work. Job hunting wasn't going as well as she wanted, so she let it take a back seat until something concrete came around. It was because she was being picky, looking for

CHAPTER 35: PLANS USUALLY GO AWRY
As Kali sat in the garden the next day, waiting for Ember to get ready, she thought more about her conversation with Samuel. She understood his dilemma but from a different perspective. He was adamant Flora wasn't a vindictive woman, but grief and betrayal brought out the worst in people. If Flora didn't get over her pain and it transformed into disdain, they would be in for more heat. The ticking bombs were lining up, it seemed, waiting for the right day to explode in their faces. The chair by her scraped the stone grounds, drawing her eyes away from the flowers. Ysabel, elegantly dressed, as usual, slid into the seat.

CHAPTER 36: A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
Stripping out of her sleeved shirt, Kali used her leg to kick the apartment door shut. She caught a flash of movement at the side of her eyes and jumped, yelping in panic. Ember did the same, jumping back and jostling the box she held before dropping it. They laughed, Ember from amusement and Kali from anxiety. "Why did you scream?" Ember throatily laughed. "Sorry, I saw a flash and forgot someone else was here with me.""That happens." Ember looked down at Kali's hands. "What did you go to the car for?"

CHAPTER 37: A MAN AFTER HER HEART
Kali sat in her bed later in the evening, reading a book while she waited for Samuel to return from his run. The desire to tell him about everything that happened with Richard was strong, but fear of his reaction held her back. Since she mentioned him a few times, she noted his unease even when he tried to appear comprehensive of their situation. He was, after all, still married to the ex-girlfriend of his mother's lover. Nervous, she dropped the book and began deftly massaging the knot in her shoulder. She was relatively calmer when the bedroom door opened, and a sweaty Samuel stepped into the room. He smiled at her in greeting, peeling the earbuds out of his ears and unzipping the thick jacket he wore. "How was your run?" "Good." "Can I talk to you about something after you shower?" She jumped into it before she could talk herself out of it. "Sure thing. Give me a minute." Kali relaxed back on the pillows while he walked to the bathroom. She placed the book on her bedside table

CHAPTER 38: A NEW LINE OF ATTACK
“Are you ready?” “Just a minute.” Kali strutted to the mirror, turning her head to get a clear view of her ear while she struggled to fit the earring pin through. “I don’t know why it’s giving me problems today. I am seriously thinking of investing in magnetic earrings.” “Here, let me.” He brushed her fingers away and pulled her closer. He looped the first earring and helped her with the second. She thanked him, then adjusted her hair before grabbing her purse. This was the third dinner she had been to in two weeks, and there were more planned down the line. Thanks to Ember, her master, Kali thought with a smile, she knew how to prepare ahead. All her outfits were sent to the cleaners, stashed in bags and hung in the wardrobe. Then she picked out what shoes she needed and all the jewellery she planned to put on and set them aside. So she was never stuck on what to wear or what went with what. “Where did I put the gift?” “On the table.” “Ah.” She rushed to the desk to pick up the

CHAPTER 39: NO BANDAGES FOR BROKEN HEARTS
Christen walked into her house, grateful to step out of her heels after spending hours on her feet at Daniel’s house. The soles of her feet were sore from being stuffed in her heels for so long. The dinner had been eventful, so much time was spent interacting with guests and family members. It felt like she had been standing for ages. It didn't usually bother her, but her mood was greatly affected by the pity she felt for her friend. Seeing Samuel at the party was what Flora needed to get over him. He was happily married, and his wife hung on his every word. She supported him and seemed enamoured by him. It also didn't skip her attention that Kali wasn't in the best of relationships with Ysabel either.

CHAPTER 40: THE PAINFUL TRUTH
In the morning, after leaving the house, Samuel decided to stop by the company before heading to work. He wanted to visit his brother Samuel and officially congratulate him on the promotion while actively hoping to evade his mother. He was off to a good start after walking out of the elevator and crossing the threshold of his brother's office. "Little brother!" He rolled his eyes at the title and took a seat. "To what do I owe the pleasure of your pretty face in my office.""I had a list of people I wanted to check in on today, and I realized I haven't seen your new office, Mr Vice President.""Yeah. Nepotism at its finest.""Oh come on, don't do that." Samuel scolded sternly. "You may work at your parent's company, but no one can dispute that you wo
