Chapter 41 - We belong together.
ArianaSILENCE FELL AND A GROUP OF BIRDS took flight. We could hear the fight in the distance, but when silence fell, the guards who were in the camp looked at each other as if they hadn’t heard something they had been waiting to hear.I was just about to try and howl again when the cage around me suddenly started to pull away and I dropped to the ground. I didn’t hang around to find out what the hell was happening and burst past the soldiers on my way back home. Not my peaceful house in the forest. My home is in the castle. I knew I would never see my peaceful home in the forest again, but it no longer mattered.I was just about to burst through the forest line that showed the border of the two kingdoms when I heard his howl behind me. I turned around to see two men carrying a half-dazed Lorenzo. He was still alive, but he had been badly injured, which made me wonder if she was still alive. I didn’t want to waste time as we rushed him across the clearing and into the castle.Trixie a

Chapter 42 - The heart of a true queen.
I knew that tensions were brewing all around us. I could feel it even in my room. Sadly, most people would never know why I ran. Hell, I wasn’t even entirely sure anymore. After my bath, I couldn’t sleep and Lesley suggested that we go for a walk. We were walking through the gardens when I noted people making their way back to town. Many of them were crying, and some of the faces were of the family Lorenzo and I went to see.“Lesley, would it be possible for me to see the dead?” I whipped around, giving the poor girl behind me a fright. She seemed to think about it for a moment and then nodded. I wasn’t sure if she was asking permission through the pack link or if she was just thinking about it, and frankly, I didn’t care. Even if she said no, I would have found a way to go and pay my last respects.Silence fell over the great hall as we walked in and it almost felt as if people were too scared to approach me. I walked to where the first warrior’s family was standing near him and than

Chapter 43 - Looking forward to being courted.
LorenzoI was having a hard time keeping my eyes off Ariana and on the people that needed my attention. Silently swearing at myself for how stupid I had been in the beginning, I also promised myself that I would do whatever it took to win her back. Surprisingly, both my parents were in my corner and agreed that making Ariana queen was the best for our people. It was as if my father had finally seen the light and my mother was simply ecstatic. She even offered to try and smooth things over with Ariana and her first duty was to make sure Ariana was presentable for the funeral. That was when she came up with the idea of gifting Ariana her first set of jewels my father gave her when he was courting her.Ariana outshone the beauty of the jewels. She was just that amazing … Or I was biased … Maybe a little of both.ArianaAFTER A WEEK OF MOURNING, it felt really good to be able to trade my black dress for a blue one. I could feel the tension lift as all around the kingdom, the black mournin

Chapter 44 - Feeling like a queen.
I no longer felt as if I wanted to run. For the first time in a very long time, I wasn’t thinking about a house in the forest. I wasn’t sure if it was because the one I did have turned out to be yet another horror story in my life or if it was because I was finally close to having a family, but it didn’t really matter which. I could honestly say that I was happy.Unfortunately, before Lorenzo and I could officially start dating, there had to be a ball and I couldn’t help but laugh when his mother announced it. Lorenzo’s intention to court me had to be officially announced in front of all the nobles since they would all be given the opportunity to object to our union. It was all part of their pomp and fuss and he hated every moment of it.Lorenzo was a great king, because of it. He didn’t want to spend his time lazing about or having parties that cost his people money. He wanted to take care of them. All of them. That now included the pixies who might want to stay in what used to be th

Chapter 45 - One kingdom, one people.
It was truly a magical evening with incredible food, good champagne, not that I drank much of it, and great company. Lorenzo and I danced and I loved walking out onto the balcony with him to get some fresh air. People in general seemed happy with the announcement, but I hadn’t missed a couple of the glares I received from that small group of people. We all knew they were going to object to Lorenzo marrying me. Just like they were objecting to the slaves being set free, and the kingdom allowing the pixies to stay in their country. In general, this group objected to any kind of change that might affect their so-called status. If only they knew how fragile that status was and how close Lorenzo was to taking it away from them. The authority to both grand and withdraw titles lay with the king. Their families might have received the titles years ago from another king, but it was now Lorenzo’s turn and I was afraid that if they kept up their resistance, he might just show them what life as a

Chapter 46 - The perfect first date.
THERE WAS SO MUCH TO ORGANIZE and so little time, that I was slowly beginning to wonder if Lorenzo and I would ever really have a date. We were constantly busy preparing for either a meeting with someone or the next ball in our honour, so I didn’t even realize on the morning of our first date things were different.Lesley was more excited than normal when she helped me to get dressed before breakfast, but before I could comment on it, a guard appeared to tell me that Lorenzo was looking for me in the foyer. I was a little confused as I made my way down the stairs to find him standing there in riding clothes with a basket in one hand.“Good morning, I was wondering if you would like to escort me to an event today.” Mischief danced around in his eyes and I squinted mine as I looked at him.“There is no event in my diary. What am I missing?” I was feeling really awful thinking I missed something when he burst out laughing.“Well, we have been so busy lately, that I thought you could use

Chapter 47 - Dealing with rumours ...
OUR DATE WAS PERFECT, and I was smiling the next morning when Lesley woke me. I couldn’t believe how fast I had become used to this new lifestyle, and I couldn’t wait for all the other slaves to also have better lives. In the meantime, Lorenzo had all the whips taken away from the guards. Beds had been moved into the cells for the slaves to sleep on, and they were getting three proper meals a day. Until we could officially announce them free, they were still slaves and the guards still had to keep an eye on them, but I knew it wasn’t going to be long before they were free and I could live with that. The next couple of weeks were going to be incredibly busy and we were slowly figuring out who I would choose as my lady. I didn’t want to lose Lesley, but I wanted her to be happy, so the queen agreed that I should make her the first. That way, if she mingled with the noblemen and she found a husband, I would still see her often. She also knew a lot about royal protocol, so it would be eas

Chapter 48 - Staying true to my values ...
“Lorenzo, perhaps we should move this conversation somewhere private.” Everyone … Literally everyone was staring at us now, and I was beginning to feel as if both of them need to be properly put in their place! “She was the one going around publicly trying to humiliate me, and I haven’t just heard this from you, Ariana. Two other people mentioned it to me tonight.” I sighed, knowing there was no way I was going to save this woman from further humiliation. If I wasn’t the only one hearing her gossip … She had made her rounds all right … I took a step back, but thankfully, I could feel that Lorenzo had at least calmed down a little. “Take your wife home!” Lorenzo growled at the woman’s husband. “And I expect to see both of you in my office first thing in the morning!” The man nodded and as they left the ballroom, I could see he was furious hissing at his wife. Dammit. I really didn’t mean for this to happen, but what else was I going to do? I couldn’t very well lie to Lorenzo when he a

Chapter 49 - Our second date.
OUR SECOND DATE was an even bigger adventure than the first. We were going to help the pixies as they prepared to clear out places for the new homes. Lorenzo was close to finalizing the last part of the law and he would be announcing that the slaves were being freed the following week.I had no idea what excited me more. Seeing my people free or the fact that once that was done, I was free and Lorenzo and I could actually get engaged. I hadn’t said anything about that last part, but I was secretly hoping he would get around to asking me once the slaves were officially freed.Another thing I noticed was that the people in the castle were gossiping a lot less after we banned our friends from a couple of social events. We were basically in the height of the social season and all the events at the moment were in Lorenzo's and my honour, so if they got banned as she did … They would miss out on the most important events of their lives.Word had spread that I was getting ready to choose lad

Chapter 50 - The heat of passion
THAT EMBER THAT SPARKED didn’t seem to want to die down and the next morning, as I walked into the dining room, it seemed to light up like a bonfire at the sight of Lorenzo. An ache started to form down there and it was frustrating since it felt as though I had peed my damn pants!I knew exactly what it was. Some of the slaves talked about it over the years and some seemed to enjoy whatever they did with a male to relieve that pain, while others seemed to hate it and said that it hurt. What I’ve also heard is that when you are wet, it doesn’t hurt, but when you aren’t …“Ariana?” My eyes snapped up to find everyone staring at me. “Are you alright?” The queen looked worried and I frowned.“Yes, I’m fine, Your Highness. I’m just incredibly hot. Is anyone else hot?” I tried to cool myself with a napkin, but what was really happening registered a split-second later when Lorenzo’s growl echoed throughout the room and he moved incredibly fast, pulling me into his arms. His canines were just
