I felt the breath whoosh out of my lungs at the bluntness of her question, my mind reeling as it struggled to come up with something…anything that I could say at that moment. But my attempts to think of a reason were all futile.

Savannah’s mother's eyes piercing into me. It was almost like she could see right through my uncertainty, my doubts, my unspoken questions. I swallowed hard, feeling a lump form in my throat. What exactly was I supposed to say? Arthur and I had never really defined what we were, and honestly, I had no idea where I stood with him.
