Chapter 9

A Werewolf

Matthew had already made up his mind on some things and had called his secretary the night before to start the process of buying Emerald’s magazine.

He was no more content with just watching her from a distance.

He had always been possessive towards her but this time. He was unable to hold back his need to possess her anymore. He wanted her. He did not care about the consequences of her entering his world.

He drove over to her work place the next day. He usually did not control companies himself, but wanted to be closer to her, so he took on the job of CEO.

The moment Matthew drove to her office, he heard the sound of her familiar heartbeat, smelled her familiar scent as he entered the elevator with his assistants, and the elevator climbed all the way to her floor.

The smell got even stronger as they moved up, this let him know he was getting closer to her. The elevator doors opened, and it did not take him more than a second to lock eyes with her.

The moment she saw his face, she went as pale as a sheet of paper. For some reason, her erratic heart at this moment and the look of horror on her face was very interesting to him.

It only took a second before he looked away, but her world seemed to have been completely crushed to rubble.

There was no hope, life was bleak. Just when she thought she would have time to clear her head, he had to be her boss.

Why did he buy her company?

He greeted the department managers before making his way to the top floor. He had only bothered to greet certain specific departments when he entered, as they were very key to the projects he was about to take on. He wanted to know every one of them by face.

His mood was chaotic when he first entered the office today, but the moment he saw her face, for some reason his mood had lifted.

“Emerald,” he tasted her name on his lips before going ahead to fulfill his task for the day,

While he was having the time of his life, Emerald’s life was completely getting destroyed. It did not take long for her enemy Lucy to notice that something was definitely wrong and come around like a vengeful ghost to haunt her when she’s at her lowest.

“Miss Jackson, why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost?” Lucy asked

“Maybe it’s because I have seen a ghost,” Emerald said, always haunting me, hovering around looking for a moment to pound to take over.

“If you are not a ghost or poltergeist what would you be?” Emerald asked.

“You dare call me a ghost? I was just worried about you. You suddenly became several shades whiter. It can’t be that you have already annoyed the CEO before he’s even entered the office, right?” Lucy asked.

Emerald wondered how she could be so spot on. To this, she nearly frowned and almost gave herself away. Did she really notice? She did not believe it.

“Wouldn’t that mean that I know the CEO? I did not know you had such wild imaginations, Lucy. But don’t worry, if any of us is going to offend the CEO first, if any of us is going to get in trouble first, it most definitely wouldn’t be me,” Emerald said.

She felt she had hidden it enough, hoping Lucy Leaves, she returned to her task very quickly. She would need to find time after work to talk to him.

Soon, she found space that night.

Matthew, on the other hand, was oddly uncomfortable since the kiss from the night before.

His emotion churned all night and as the day grew, the tension in his being was expanding, his emotions were building and were about to explode.

But, night had come. No matter how much he tried to stay focused, he felt he was about to transform.

This was odd, given that even a full moon would not be able to force him to transform and go into full blown rage as a pure blood wolf king.

He hurriedly dismissed his assistants and secretaries and made sure he was alone. Unknown to him, a little rabbit was coming up to make things worse.

If he had been half as sane as usual he would have noticed the moment he stepped out of the elevator on his floor.

He had forgotten to lock the door to his office and while he was barely holding on, barely keeping sane, his office door cracked open and a little rabbit stuck her head through.

The room was dark, but Emerald could still make out a man in front of a desk, so she inched closer.

Because she had started rattling away her memorized apology, she did not even register the sound of growling that close to her.

The next moment she found herself slammed onto the office desk.

She was disoriented for a moment only to look up into very wide eyes she saw his face distort inhumanly and found that his teeth were too much like that of a wild beast, they could know more be called teeth. They looked like fangs; they did not just look like fangs, they were fangs.

The moment she noticed what was happening, her mind raced, fear gripped her. She had watched enough movies to know, this was the moment someone would get killed. She struggled and thrashed wildly but his grip was too strong.

“Mr. Reeves,” she called out to him but he seemed unable to hear her.

“Matthew Matthew !!” she started to call his name and for some reason, he had a hint of clarity and his grip weakened enough for her to crash onto the floor and crawl away from him whether because of panic or plain stupidity she crawled away from the door seeing as he was now by the doorway, she knew her route out had been blocked.

“What are you?” she asked and crawled away.

For some reason, the look of horror on her face cooled his head a lot.

“This is Murder! My meat will be stuck in your teeth for a thousand years,” she said and he could not help but laugh.

He was not changing. He was back to human form.

“What nonsense do I use to sprout?" he asked, don’t people usually ask for their enemies to die at this time or to be saved?”

“Where do you see a savior coming?” she asked him, “Since you are going to eat me anyway, I must make sure you don’t enjoy even a second of the process. I pray for your food to be bitter,” she said.

Seeing that he had calmed down, she was slightly relieved but knew she had gotten herself into worse trouble.

“I won’t eat you,” he said and turned away, but she did not dare escape as her knees were weak.

“What are you?” she asked.

“What do you think?” he asked and turned back to watch her.

“Please, I won’t tell anyone.”

Emerald dreaded this moment very much. She thought of all the things she had done wrong that got her to this point; she should not have agreed to the deal to act as his wife, she should not have come to his office to apologize in the dead of night, now look where she was.

“ I promise I will not tell anyone, Matthew .” No matter how many times she begged he remained paused, staring at her as though he had just discovered something interesting.

“How am I sure you're not going to tell anyone? ”

“I am really tight lipped Matthew , I will take it to the grave,” she said.

“You are right, it will be safer in the grave; if not you, at least my secret, ” Matthew said, and she fell to dread calm over her all over again.

“You were not this scared when you kissed me in the woods,” he said and she paused.

“What?” she asked.

“You had kissed me in the woods and said you will marry me, now you are going back on your word.”

“What nonsense are you sprouting?” Emerald was annoyed. Why is he pulling out lies from thin air?

“So, you never kissed a wolf in the woods as a child and promised to marry him?” he asked, looking at her curiously as he took out a new shirt from his drawer and changed.

“Of course I have not kissed…” the words died in her throat when that memory crossed her mind.

She really had kissed a wolf and promised to marry him.

“Really? You were very scared that night,” he said and she swallowed loudly.

“So now what? ” she asked.

When he saw the defeated look on her face, for some reason he was not pleased. He did enjoy her begging, but her look of defeat bothered him greatly.

Feeling slightly uncomfortable, and definitely irritated, heroes to his feet and felt agitation come over him as he paced around his office.

“I will do everything you ask, I will not leave your sight if you don't want me to, ”

He turned around and looked at her small figure by the corner, and something about her shivering irritated him.

Matthew was a predator, he could smell fear. It was both his weapon and his sense of being. But when he smelled her fear, it annoyed him.

“Not so brave now, are you? ” he asked. For some reason, his words sparked a thought in her head; did he enjoy this? Did he enjoy watching her pain? At that moment, she stood and stared at him straight in the face.

“What are you going to do with me? ” she asked.

“No more scared? ” he asked.

“Are you going to kill me? ” she asked him, and his eyes narrowed. Her emotions were consistent; she was scared from the moment she saw what he was, but her reaction bounds between cowardice and bravery.

Sometimes she dared not look at him, the next time she was full of courage. He was utterly curious about her.

“No,” he said and she nodded. I walked right past him out of his office.

She paused at the door and looked back at him, “When you have decided what to do, let me know, ” she said and left him standing there.

His demeanor brought a wide smile to his face; her back looked straight and her voice sounded slightly shaken but strong, but he could hear her heartbeat racing in fear.

He seemed to have finally found that thing about her that completely excited him.

As Emerald walked away, her legs wobbled, threatening to drop her to the floor. But, she was determined to get into the elevator and leave that floor. She knew very little about him, she was not sure if he would change his mind and come after her. While he was still sane, intended to leave quickly.

The elevator opened shortly after she pressed the button, and she dashed in. Before the door could close a hand interrupted it out of nowhere.

Her heart leapt to her throat at the sight of the person on the other side.

“I will take you home, ” he said.

“That is unnecessary, ” she said. All the hair on her skin rose sharply at his words. She would be actually stupid if she let him take her home.

“I can find out where you live, you know. You had filled out your personal information correctly, right? ” he asked and she bit her lips and looked down at her feet.

“I insist, ” he said.

The elevator went all the way to the basement parking lot and they got out. Even though the parking space was greatly lit, she could not reduce the absolute fear she felt to be alone in his presence at this moment.

What if he does something to her on her way home? What if she never gets home? She followed him up to his car and hesitated before getting in.

At first, the drive was silent, until he reminded her she had yet to tell him where she lived.

“Or would you prefer I take you back home with me?” he asked and she began to shake all over again.

“Calm down, I won’t kill you,” he said in frustration. He was not sure what he wanted from her.

He was obviously excited by her fear, yet bothered by it.

“Who marries just because of a childhood promise. Why is mine coming to hunt? I also promised to give my childhood neighbor four children, is he also going to pop out?” she blurted and his cold gaze swept over her.

“Your mouth is really quick, isn’t it? It moves before your brain can keep up,” he said.

“I’m sorry,” she lowered her head.

“I won’t kill you? At least not to keep my secret,” he said in frustration.

“Really?” she asked.

“Really,” he said, and even if she did not believe him, she found herself breaking into tears.

Her tears came out of nowhere, making him frustrated and panicked at the same time.
