I sat on the front porch, cradling a cup of lukewarm coffee. I was trying to keep my head clear, and it was kinda working, except I wasn’t really letting my mind focus on a particular thought. I sighed as my eyes involuntarily returned to the adjoining street, where his car would easily come into view if he was coming.

Luca was stable now, although he had battled a hellish fever through the night. My mind, no longer clouded by the frantic haze of the past day, could finally think a little clearer.

Gausto was on the porch too, just a few paces away from where I sat, he wouldn’t leave my sight, and we had all grown tired of telling him to go get some rest himself.
