Claire rested her chin on her palm as she looked at the trees rushing by through the car window. Ethan knew that traveling from Cartersville to Memphis would take around five to six hours but much to her surprise, he agreed as soon as she asked.
Now, they were a few hours in through the ride and have already finished listening to the same playlist thrice. The music resonating in the vehicle through the speakers was faint enough that she could still hear her heartbeat racing. Claire realized that she was likely to spend at least the next twelve hours with Ethan— a flirty billionaire playboy who always acted recklessly. The realization hit her after she got over the mysterious surge of boldness she had, and it made her antsy.
“I’m sorry”, she mumbled without taking her eyes off the scenery outside. “I know this is too sudden”
“I don’t really mind”, Ethan replied with a grin. He peeled his gaze off the road for a split second to glance at her dim reflection
“So…” Ethan started to say after taking a sip of coffee with finesse. “Where do we go from here?” Claire heard him but didn’t bother replying as she was too busy stuffing herself with some pancakes. They slept with an empty stomach last night, thus, she was extra hungry that morning. So, after checking out from the motel, they found a diner and settled in with some breakfast. “Careful”, he said, chuckling. “Eating like that isn’t really lady-like” “Huh”, she mumbled with a stuffed mouth as she looked up at him with a glare. “I ron weally hare” “I can’t understand you when you talk with your mouth full” Claire swallowed. “I said, I don’t really care” He sighed while shaking his head. A small smile played on his lips as he grabbed a napkin before leaning in across the table to wipe off a small trace of syrup on the side of her mouth. “Eat slowly, geez. You’re such a pig” “Who are you calling a pig?!” she exclaimed as her ch
“Claire!”Upon hearing her voice, she sat up in her bed. She kicked herself out from under her blankets and was about to head out when suddenly her bedroom door opened, revealing a teary-eyed Jess.“Hi, Jess”, she greeted as she waved a hand. Her friend then ran to her and tackled her into a hug, causing her to shriek in surprise. Laughing, she said, “What’s wrong?”“Are you serious?!” Jess exclaimed, burying her face into her chest. “We were worried! You suddenly ran off to Memphis alone!”Claire chuckled and patted her head in assurance. “I wasn’t alone. I was with Ethan”“Ethan?”She looked up and saw Jay leaning against the doorframe with his arms coolly crossed over his broad chest. “Oh, hey. You came”Her room was dim as the sun was starting to set outside and she didn’t turn her lights on yet, but as she looked clos
“Sorry!” Jess exclaimed in between breaths as she jogged. She waved an arm to make herself appear more visible within the crowd. A few moments later, she stopped a few steps away from Greg before leaning on her knees to recover. “I woke up late today”Greg chuckled and scratched the back of his head. “It’s okay, don’t sweat it”The two had agreed to meet at the mall that day to do Christmas shopping together. He actually offered to pick her up but Jess didn’t want him to meet her family just yet. He’s been driving her home from school often for the past few months but she made sure to get off at least a block away from her house every time. This was because she didn’t want her parents to get the wrong idea. They weren’t dating.“Here”, he said as he offered a bottle of water that he hurriedly bought at a nearby food stall. Jess took it gratefully before chugging it
“You sound happier than usual today”, Claire said with a chuckle and her phone pressed against her ear. “Did something good happen?”“Well, it is Christmas”, Jess replied from the other line. “It’s the season of cheer!”“If you say so”Claire continued to walk towards the bus stop. It was the morning of Christmas Day and she had gone shopping for gifts just then since her salary for working part-time at the library and tutoring Ethan was just wired to her the night before. It was pretty hectic at the mall, and it was extremely difficult to find things worth giving since most of the good stuff already ran out of stock.“Don’t forget to come over for dinner!” her friend reminded her. “Jay is looking forward to seeing you today, as well”She sensed a hint of tease in her tone and laughed. “Sure sure”Then, after bidding goodbyes, she drop
Claire sat on her bed as she brushed her hair. When she was younger, her mother would brush her hair with a hundred strokes every night saying that it will make it healthier. Since then, it became her habit to do so—except for counting up to one hundred.Once she was satisfied, she stood up to place her hairbrush on her bedside table and switch off the lights. Then, she positioned herself under her comforter and closed her eyes. However, the moment she did so, her phone rang loudly.“Ugh”, she groaned but she stood back up anyway. She walked towards her desk where her phone was placed after glancing at the clock. It was ten minutes before midnight. “Who the heck would call me at this hour?”Even Jess, her best friend, never called her when it was this late and would wait until the next day instead. Impatiently, she grabbed her phone and the light from the screen made her squint her eyes. She didn’t bother looking at the caller
It was Monday yet again.Jess complained how the winter break passed by in a blink of an eye, but to Claire who found her break eventful, that wasn’t the case. She had lunch with Jess and Jay last weekend to celebrate her birthday but she could barely concentrate since she suddenly became fully aware of the feeling of the cold metal bracelet on her wrist.“See you later!” Jess waved goodbye before jogging towards her class. She waved back with a smile and headed towards her class while the bell rang as if on cue. Just when she was about to enter the classroom, she felt a pat on her shoulder and immediately halted in her steps. When she turned around to look at the culprit, she saw her homeroom teacher smiling at her.“Miller”, she smiled in greeting before pointing a thumb over her shoulder. “I’m sorry to pull you out of class but there’s something that I need to discuss with you”Claire nodded
“The venue offers kayaking, too”, Patricia stated while looking at her laptop screen. “It would be great if we could include that in the obstacle race”Claire wrote down the suggestion in her notebook. The committee had been working on planning out the camp’s activities for about a week now and for some reason, there had been an unspoken decision to appoint her as the secretary, which wasn’t so bad in her opinion.“I think that’s a good suggestion”, Jess chimed in while nodding her head in agreement. “But it’ll bring us additional work, no doubt, since we have to secure the participants’ safety, too”She agreed with Jess in her mind and wordlessly nodded with her. Then, she glanced at Justin, the other committee member that she didn’t recognize at first but has now come to know during the past few days when they had worked together. He never contributed much to the discussions an
“Yes, sir!” Claire answered in a hurry upon hearing a guest looking for a server. Her arms were starting to scream in pain but she was lucky enough to have managed to balance the tray while fast-walking and dodging people left and right. “Drinks?”The middle-aged man frowned impatiently at her but decided at the last second to not bother lecturing her. He handed her his empty glass and took a new one from her tray before turning around to leave.Claire had been keeping herself busy for the past few hours, rushing from one end of the room to the other, to avoid stumbling upon Ethan and Stephanie. This was fairly easy to do since the couple was always surrounded by people.Upon realizing that her tray was once again empty, she walked back towards the kitchen.“Ugh”, she groaned the moment she set the tray on the counter. Then, she stretched out her arms to ease out the pain. Her hands were already starting to tremble from
