CHAPTER 14

NATHAN

The reality came crashing down upon me worse than I had ever imagined. I was not looking for a long-term relationship with this weird girl, but knowing what she has been through and what she would go through once we part ways, sent shivers down my spine.

“You cannot marry a stranger,” I snapped.

“Many girls in my country marry a stranger, Nate,” she smiled sadly. “I am lucky that I was not married off to a man when I was barely fourteen. At least I was given time to grow up, time to live my dream, time to meet you –” she whispered the last word sadly.

“Don’t go back,” I insisted. “Stay here. I will ensure that you have a visa. I will arrange for a permanent residency for you here.”

“And do what?” she asked, smiling now.

“I told you Amy can make you a star in the arts community,” I suggested. “Open a gallery, run shows. Be famous, be rich.”

“And the cost would be?” she asked with raised eyebrows.

“You don’t have to pay anything… I will make sure that everything is sorted,” I str
