Forty-Four

Iris

When I looked down at the abyss of water in front of me, fear gripped me. The wind tugged on my hair, whipping it across my face and temporarily blinding me. I imagined them pushing me, and I gasped, panting in fear.

My feet shuffled backward, pulling away from the edge, and my eyes searched the horizon for any sign of escape. There was none. My body shivered, hoping that the love I shared with Adonis would soften his heart and make him understand that I had no intention of harming him.

Boots crunched on the gravel, and the guards realized another set of vans was approaching. My heart began to beat so fast that I lost control. The guards' radio crackled, and they spoke in low voices.

I could feel Adonis' presence. Fear gripped my heart when I noticed a third convoy with the syndicate flag. Panic was brewing within me; there would undoubtedly be bloodshed. When Adonis stepped out of the car, I choked back a cry and felt like my breath had been cut off.
