48. Being Reckless

Dinner is a tense affair. I had to whip up something quick yet nutritious.

“Lenny, come down for dinner,” I holler once I have set the table. Isaac had offered to help, but I refused.

When Isleen comes downstairs, she pauses at the foot of the staircase. Her eyes were pinned on Isaac. I surreptitiously glance at him. His gaze flickers toward me. I offer him a nervous smile before glancing back at Isleen.

“Baby, wash your hands and sit down. Fast.” However, she remains standing on her spot.

“Why is he still here?” Her face scrunches into a scowl. The tension has intensified and I have no clue how to diffuse it.

“Isleen,” I warn. She gives a petulant glare but thankfully relents. She wordlessly sits down and doesn’t utter a word for the rest of the dinner. I should be proud of her, not because she didn’t voice her anger, but because she didn’t throw a tantrum. She doesn’t usually. Isaac observes her as she stabs her fork into the vegetables and shoves them into her mouth.
