Chapter 43

DEA

I must have fallen asleep waiting for Victor to return home. Saint, Sam, and Sinclair had sat up with me until each one of us had surrendered to the exhaustion pulling us under. I must have had the worst night of my life but I was so happy it was over, so happy the people I cared about were safe and the ones who threatened them weren't alive to torment us any further.

My body ached from the shift—I still couldn't believe I had a wolf living inside me. Even now, I felt the creature bristle beneath my flesh as if I and it were the same and yet still a completely separate entity.

I shifted, feeling a soft mattress beneath me instead of the lumpy couch I had drifted off on. Peeling my eyelids open, I found myself engulfed in the darkness of Victor's room. He was asleep behind me, his chest rising and falling at a steady pace. His beard scraped the skin at my neck as he nuzzled into it.
