Obviously I was doubting the authenticity of what he said. Although I had my head lowered, that doesn't mean my ears were having problems. If he had sent them away, at least I would have been aware.

It would even have saved me the strength of arguing about whether to raise my head up.

Damon was still composed. He spoke indifferently. “I signaled them.”

“Mm.” I didn't say anything again.

Well, Damon has always been hard to figure out completely, so I couldn't say it's impossible for it not to be true.
