Prologue

Screams. Fear. Bloodshed. Chaos.

That day was the darkest day of my clan. It had been predicted by the oracle that a comet will pass over the sky and turn the sun red. A red sun was a vampire's most feared because it always left us powerless, weak and too drained to fight against any danger that would come. It was our weakness.

We tried to keep this information a secret but somehow, it had gotten to the werewolves and they chose to attack us on that day.

"We're under attack!" A voice screamed from somewhere outside my room.

I abruptly got off my bed and rushed to the window. Since I was so small at the time— a six years old— I needed to mount a chair to look out the window properly.

That was when I saw the evil taking place outside.

My clan was getting massacred by werewolves. They were biting and tearing them apart as they tried to run away from them.

Shock seized me and I froze. My body began to tremble and I started believing that I would die too. Tears streamed down my face and I immediately wanted to be with my mother.

As if on cue, my mother stormed into my room.

"Mom!" I screamed when I saw her and jumped down from the chair immediately.

I ran into her embrace and she held me tight. We were both crying and I could see the genuine fear on her face.

My mother was never somebody to show fear. She was one of the most feared vampires in the clan. Everyone respected her and she always took down her enemies. She was a fierce woman and my role model. I strived to be like her.

"Mommy, what's going on? Why are we getting attacked? Why aren't we fighting back?" I cried.

My mother trembled with every tear drop as she wiped away mine. "The red sun is causing this. It's draining us. Look at me, I came to get you so that we can run. It's not safe for you here," she explained while her fingers trembled frantically on my face.

"What of dad?" I asked.

She shut her eyes in pain. "He's fine," she whispered and I could tell she was lying. "We need to go now," she added and got to her feet.

She took my hand and dragged me out of my room. As we ran down the corridor, we came into contact with huge wolves tearing down the place. I saw a man try to run as the wolf seized him by the neck and crushed him. There was so much blood and my body went cold.

My mother never stopped once, she kept running nonstop. I cried as I saw more people dying. My heart was hammering hard against my chest and my mother kept crying as she ran past her clan helplessly.

"Help us! Help!" A woman cried just as a wolf slammed her against a stone wall. I saw the light leave her eyes as she died.

We soon broke outside. This was where most of the action was going on. The trees were just some miles away and I could see them.

"We have to run to the woods and use it as cover from the wolves," my mother suddenly said as we ran through the blood that had already spilled all over the place.

I saw some people trying to crawl away as wolves crushed them. More blood stained the earth and I thought I was going to lose my mind.

We were about to take another step forward when a wolf landed before us. It locked gazes with my mother and she hid me behind her back.

I could swear that I saw the wolf smirk as it glared at my mother.

"Miranda? Whatever happens, promise me that you won't stop running. I need you to run to the woods and not look back. Even if you hear someone calling to you, don't stop. Keep running because your life depends on it!" My mother exclaimed.

I had not understood what she meant until all hell broke loose. The huge wolf charged at my mother. She pushed me out of the way and I fell back far away.

"Run!" She screamed as she pulled out her sword.

I was frozen in shock as I saw the wolf crash into my mother. She tried to attack with her sword but she was just too weak and drained.

"Run!Miranda! Get to safety!" She screamed and I saw the way her body trembled due to fear.

It was when I got to my feet to run that the wolf drove its crawls into her stomach. She gasped in shock.

"Mom!" I screamed and fell back on my butt as I stared in shock.

The wolf shape-shifted back into his human form and caught my mother just as she began to fall. He laughed and touched her cheeks.

"You brought this upon yourself, Maliyah. You should have killed me when you had the chance," he muttered and dropped my mother's body to the floor.

Suddenly, my father appeared out of the blue. Stricken by rage, he recklessly tried to attack my mother's killer but the man swiftly stopped him with a claw driven into my father's chest just like he had done to my mother.

"Dad!!" I screamed.

At this point, I felt as if the world had ended. I slowly crawled to my mother. She was still alive and trying to speak.

"Run. . .Miranda. . .why didn't you run? Why?" she cried and she stopped breathing.

"No, no! Mommy, please! Don't leave me! Open your eyes! I'm sorry for disobeying you! Don't punish me like this mommy! Mommy open your eyes!" I cried as I felt my heart break into pieces.

My father slowly crawled to us with what was left of his life. He held my face and I could see the tears and pain in them.

"I'm sorry for not being a good father. Promise me that you'll keep fighting! That you won't give up! Promise me!" He screamed before collapsing on my mother's body.

"No! Daddy! Mommy!" I screamed as the evil man grabbed me too.

"You're coming with me, little demon!" He commanded and gave me a hard blow to my head.

My vision started to blur as I watched my parents' lifeless bodies.

"Don't leave me. . ." I whispered as the subconscious world claimed me.
