Chapter fifty six

Luka’s POV

“I brought you soup,” Emily said as she stood in front of my door, holding a tray at the same time giving me a scrutinizing look.

I knew what it meant. She wanted to know if I’d been sick or not. I couldn’t blame her for that either. I was pretty sure I wasn’t supposed to be standing up yet. My body ached from yesterday and what was worse than the shame that came after vulnerability?

Yet I couldn't explain how relieved I felt from letting the load off my chest and the exhaustion settle into an easy slumber. It had taken a long time to fall asleep last night. The nightmares were never as bad, but they would make it hard for me to get enough rest.

“Can I at least come in?” asked Emily with a little hesitation, knowing full well that she didn’t have permission to come in. I nodded.

She was still holding onto the tray as if it were some sort of treasure.

“I think you should take it now, it is still hot”

“What are you doing here?” I asked her instead and she seemed surprised
