Chapter 49

Waking up in a dimly lit room, the morning sun was setting in and enough to blind me. My head throbbed with pain, and my body ached as I slowly regained consciousness. Blinking away the haze, I realized I was lying our bed, and the scent of antiseptic filled the air.

"Easy there, Lia," a familiar voice said, and I turned my head to see Max sitting in a chair beside me in the bed, concern etched across his face. "You took quite a hit."

The memories of the spar with Thomas rushed back, the taunts, the pain, and finally, the dizziness that had caused me to black out. I groaned and tried to sit up, but Max gently pushed me back down.

"Take it easy," he urged, his hand resting on my shoulder. "You gave it everything you had out there."
