If eyes could kill I'd be dead.
"Just keep your eyes down Loa, don't loo-,"
Danielle went down before me . . . crashing into the concrete, scraping knees against the group, blood being drawn, I shut my eyes and freeze knowing I should've run.
"Where are you two going in such a rush?" Our predator circled us, and to be completely honest I was getting tired of his shit. But what could I do? Being tall doesn't help you out, I don't work out and the most fulfilling thing I've had for lunch in the past few months is ramen noodle cups with the plastic vegetables.
"Mace just leave us alone, please," I say lowly as I help Danielle up. We were drawing a crowd.
I hated this.
No one would scream stop when he bashed our faces into the ground, no one would call for help when he stomped on our hands and twisted our ankles.
"Shut up Loa, what do you always have to be so bitchy?" He snorts and I roll my eyes, not at him but the ground. We were surrounded.
Mace Evans was the school's 'bully', except, he only bullied us. Two poor girls growing up in a broken background pulled into a world of rich kids with daddies who throw hundred dollar bills at them when they're depressed. He was tall and fat and reeked of pizza rolls. His hair was to his shoulder, un-kept and greasy. Mace was as pale as a ghost and sweated buckets even when he was simply standing.
A slap rings me out of my inner thoughts and I gasp for air as my palms hit the ground, causing an electric shock. Two of his friends grabbed Danielle and began dragging her away screaming. I tried to stand and reach for her but Mace pushed me back onto the floor.
I looked up at him and tried to kick his chins but he merely collapsed on top of me and began choking. Everyone stood around cheering from him, throwing in kicks at me when they could as I tried to block them off with a fat heavy hand clamped around my neck. He grinned his spoilt teeth at me as I desperately tried to claw at his arms. My mind remained on Danielle, I could only imagine what she was going through right now, and I didn't want to.
Black spots blurred my vision as his grip got tighter. "St-" I couldn't finish it, I felt like my neck was being crushed. He lifted me for a second only to harshly shove me back to the ground causing pain to soar through my head.
I was about to give in to the pain when his hand was finally lifted and his body when soaring into the other direction. Heaving, I rolled over perhaps to get more air in and noticed a giant standing over Mace. He angrily stomped on his head, and the crowd went quiet as the giant's friends jumped in. Mace screamed from under him, blood now pouring out from the same place of his face. I didn't know what to do, so I thought about seeking Danielle but I just felt so weak, so dizzy.
Nevertheless, I stood drowsily and limped in the direction of the school only to have a hand clamp around my arm. I scream and try to pull it away but the person is strong. A giant stood before me, his eyes still ablaze and filled with furry.
"Wh- what do you want?" I ask, scared out of my mind and he only begins dragging me in the direction of his truck I assume. Great, now I was being kidnapped.
"Hey!" I yelled but he ignored me and threw me into the back. I tried to open it up but it seemed that child's lock was on.
"P-please don't kidnap me! My friend she's-"
"She's fine." He says roughly, starting up the engine and quickly heading out of the school. I look back and find Mace on the floor, unconscious. People stood over him taking pictures and I shook my head at the scene. I silently wondered if he was dead.
"How do you know? What are you doing?"
"The words are thank you. I didn't have to save your ass." He grunts and I sigh.
"Thank you . . . So you're... not, kidnapping me?"
"No," is all he says and I lean back in my seat slowly, the headache making itself known again. I guess it was more comfortable here than under the hands of those bullies.
"Who are you?" I ask after a moment, closing my eyes. I hoped that he wouldn't snarl at me, or bite my head off because from what I saw back there, he was not to be messed with.
"Sammy."
"Okay. . . Sammy . . . what were you doing at my school?"
"I go to your school. " He looks offended as he glances at me in the mirror and I gape. He does?
"Oh. . . But you're like twenty."
"I'm seventeen." Frowning, my eyes drop to his body which barely fits on the car seat. It was brought all the way back because of his long legs and his face just didn't scream teenager to me with the light gruff that covered his cheekbones, and his defined jawline.
"Why haven't I seen you in any of my classes?"
"You do B level subjects, I'm on Z."
My mouth almost drops open as I realize that this ma- boy, is in the top classes. They're separated from us because they move at a much faster level. They get picked for everything, school debates, contest, event planning, they were at the top of the hierarchy.
"So won't what you just did affect your record?" He shrugs.
"Probably."
"Probably? And you're not worried?" He shrugs again and I can't help but eye him as if he was crazy.
"Is he dead?" I hesitated and his eyes meet mine in the mirror as he smirks.
"Probably."
Sammy lived in one of those big houses on the hills that kids like me only dreamed to visit. He was a gentleman, opening the door for me then throwing his keys at the butler who nodded. My cheeks felt swollen and my fingers felt numb, but I didn't say anything, just wondered why I was here. There was this dull ached that was forming in my head, and I touched the spot lightly, before letting out a sigh.Things never get better.
I woke up the next morning to the smell of oatmeal. Danielle stood in my room, sweeping and adding little stuff that my mother would always come to destroy.“Good morning.” She smiles at me and I smile back, sitting up.She frowns. “Did you even eat last night?” She asks, pushing the bowl towards me and I happily take it.“I had a headache,” I
True to her word after helping Danielle pick something out, she made me a sandwich and I went home with two bottles of water and a can of juice.Danielle’s mom, Sophia, was one of the kindest women I had ever met. She worked at a nursing home and although she didn’t make much, she always considered me her second daughter. When Danielle got new hand-me-downs, I got some too. Whenever relatives sent a box of food, I got half of it. If I showed up at their house beaten black and blue by my father at 3 am, she took care of me and laid me to sleep as if I wa
Chapter 6“I can’t believe that happened to you.” Danielle frowns as we enter the school gates and I shrug.“I’m used to it by now if I'm being completely honest.” She frowns and I look away. She came home only a little after I fell asleep last night, and ranted on and on about her date and how great it went. I breathed a sigh of relief knowing he wasn’t a douche and that he made her happy, even if it was only one date.
"Can we go now? I think I have a better place to go to." He suggests and I take one last look around. Students at school hyped the bar up so much; it was kinda disappointing that all I saw were old men who took off their wedding rings and a few underdressed women. The music was kinda low and no one was hype. I guess it was because today was a Wednesday.I stand and he follows suit. We get back into his sleek black car, and he immediately ignites and peels out of the parking lot."D
I watched him with hooded eyes as he handed the man the money. He had to try and hit the moving target in the center, and then he would get the bear.Sounds easy right? No.Midgame these targets went crazy, moving up and down and I bite the inside of my cheek watching as Samuel visibly got frustr
On the way home, I noticed that we ended up at Wal-Mart. He killed the engine and I turned to face him.“What’re we doing here?”“We’re gonna buy groceries,” Samuel says in a dull tone and I clench my jaw.“I don’t need any groceries, Samuel,” I tell him, getting angry. He opens his mouth to speak but I cut him off. “I know you feel sorry for me or whatever, but I don’t need your he
“Where were you yesterday?” Danielle asked as I meet her outside of my house. “And why are you out so early?”“I just had a fresh start this morning.” I lie. I just didn’t want her to see the outfit that Samuel had bought for me, nor the teddy bear, although I did have the reeboks on.“I was just around.” I shrug and she raises an eyebrow as we walk.“Around?”“Yeah,” I say simply and she scoffs.“You were with Samuel, weren’t you?”“I . . . Well –"“Loa I thought you were going to stay away from him?"“I was. But Danielle he’s really not as bad as you think. Sure he has a little anger problem, but he’s really sweet and – "
