Chapter 2: My best friend

//Raven \\

13 years later - Present day.

"You murderer! You killed your mother. You deserve nothing but death." My father's cold voice haunted my sleep.

I flinched in my sleep at the memory of my mother's lifeless body and fell off the edge of my bed with a thud.

I groaned in annoyance and quickly scrambled to my feet. My eyes moved to the cracked clock on the wall and it was ten past five.

Shit, I am late!

My head jerked to the bed adjacent and it was empty. There was no sign of Jessica, my best friend or should I say, my only friend.

Her bed was neatly laid and if I had not seen her in bed the previous night, I would have said, she was never in the room.

"Where the heck are you, Jess?" I asked myself inwardly and my subconscious mind replied in sarcasm, "She might be in the kitchen working like the hard working girl she is whiles you slept like a lazy oak. "

I groaned the second time and grabbed my things for a shower before I start my day's activities.

The warm water beats against my skin, massaging every aspect of my body. I played with the scars on my skin as I scrubbed my body, a habit I developed.

A sad smile curled on my lips and to stop myself from thinking about my sad life, I shifted my thoughts back to my best friend.

Jessica is an omega and a maid for the alpha family, but not to me. To me, she was a friend and a second mother. She was more like my shield. She cared for me when I was sick. She talked with me even when she was forbidden not to.

I still remember vividly the day I met her. She was a wounded rogue who ran into the River Moon Clan twelve years ago.

Flashback**

"This is Jessica. The pack's slave." My father's voice boomed in the maid’s room. " And your roommate."

My body stiffened, unsure if I heard him right. A roommate? A slave! When did the clan start having slaves?

"She will stay with us and help you with your duties”, he added and turned to Jessica.

My eyes also moved to her. Jessica was a pretty woman, about 5'3. She looked not more than eighteen years old.

I scrutinized her from head to toe. She was a brunette with bright green eyes.

" I'll allow you to stay here on one condition. You will work in the house and follow the Luna's orders. Am I clear?"

Jessica looked at the alpha, frightened. She looked skinny and worn out.

"Do I have to repeat myself?" My dad scowled, making Jessica and I jump away in fright.

Jessica nodded in reply.

" Get moving !" My dad roared and pushed Jess into the room. She tripped over her feet and fell to the ground in front of my bed.

Her eyes were stained with tears as she moved her head frantically.

I looked back to the door to find my father gone.

Unsure of what to do, I walked to her and reached forward to assist her but she flinched. Her hands flew over her face to shield herself from me.

However, I didn't pull away, I wanted her to see that I meant no harm. Besides, I was too little to hurt her or cause her physical pain. I was just a nine year old, girl.

I reached over again and gave her multiple taps on her shoulder and waited until she relaxed under my touch.

I then offered her a hand to help her up. Seeing that I wasn't a danger to her, Jessica slowly lowered her hand into mine.

She gave me a warm smile. She then extended her fingers to her chin and brought them forward.

I wrinkled my nose in confusion and raised my brows questioningly at her.

She gave a silent giggle as she pointed a finger to her ear and moved it from side to side, in front of me.

My frown deepened. I didn't understand her. My expression made the smile on her face stretch. She briskly took a pen and a paper out of her pocket and she scribbled,

"I am deaf... I can't hear or speak. I can only sign.'

That piqued my interest. My eyes shot up in surprise and my lips widened into a grin.

I snatched the pen and paper from her hand and wrote,

" Can you teach me how to sign? " I gazed at her expectantly.

Her forehead creased into a serious frown.

"Why? Why do you want to learn sign language?" She wrote back.

"Because I'm mute. I can hear but I can't speak." Her green eyes twinkled with questions and to put her out of her misery, I replied: "I lost my ability to speak a year ago. They stripped me of my right to speak. I can never speak again. "

Sadness covered my face and I fought with my mind so hard not to go back to that cursed day, when my stepmother took something from me. When she took my ability to speak in the cruelest and most wicked way possible.

" Of course, I will teach you. Please don't be sad." Jessica rumbled in a form of a note.

End of Flashback.*****

That was how she and I started bonding. We became great friends and she has had my back since then. We didn't have any problems with the age difference.
