8: No way out of hell

“The last time you took a book home, it took your three weeks to return it.” I remind Isaiah, the library user who stands facing me, holding the Harry Potter book in his hand.

He picks up the pen on my desk and signs on the permission booklet I push towards him. “The keyword remains ‘returned it’.” the smug answer matches his face and I roll my eyes.

“Well, I’ll need more than your word. I’ll need your library card.” I stretch my hand out to him.

“What for?”

“In case you don’t return it on the date you wrote in the permission booklet, I’ll toss your card away and you’ll never step back in again.”

He mumbles ‘bitch’ under his breath, dips his hand into his pocket and pulls out his card and hands it to me.

I beam at him, and he rolls his eyes before leaving.
