Fifty-Four

"Gypsy, please try to relax." Dante says behind me from the hospital chair he's sitting on.

I ignore him, continuing to pace back and forth on a short distance. How can I relax? How can I relax when Enzo is dying?

He's in the operation theater right now and it's been about an hour, yet no one has come out to say anything to us.

So how can I relax knowing that if something happens to Enzo, it would all be my fault?

"Oh Gypsy." I feel Dante step behind me, placing his hands on my shoulders and squeezing reassuringly.

Why is he being so kind to me? He should be upset, pissed off with me. After all, I'm the reason his best friend is fighting for his life right now.

Yet when I turn to face him, he has a warm smile on his face. My throat tightens with emotion, and I throw my arms around him in a hug.

"I will never forgive myself if something happens to him, Dante."

Dante rubs soothing circles on my back. "Look, Gypsy. I know you think it's all your fault but it really isn't, okay?"
