Escape

>>Portia

Everything passed by me in a glance.

I gave everything up. Well, it's not like I had anything there to begin with, but I'm sure no one saw this coming.

No one would have thought that I'd run away because I never thought of doing it either. Werewolves don’t just run away but I’m doing it and by doing this, I am now on the path of becoming a rogue but it really didn’t matter to me at this point.

I wanted to experience some freedom.

I ran like crazy. No matter what, I did grow up with wolves, so even though I can't shift, I can run extremely fast.

In the dead of night, when the pack slept peacefully I made my escape.

I didn't have anything on me, just what I was wearing. I had no money either. I never got an allowance. I was only given the things I needed which were bought by the head maid.

I barely have any knowledge of the outside world and no idea how to get along with humans. I’ve never even met one because my life has always been concentrated around the pack.

But,

I have the will to live.

I want my freedom. I want to escape from the misery that staying here keeps giving me.

My mate doesn’t want me and the trauma of that has caused my wolf to go completely awol. I can barely feel her, it’s like she’s even more heartbroken than me but still, I don’t want to be anyone else’s. I don’t want to get married to some old geezer and then serve him for the rest of my life.

The dense forest started coming to an end and I saw the clearing and the lighter atmosphere approaching as I kept sprinting without paying any attention to the pain in my calves.

This is the bravest I have been in my whole life.

I saw the light come closer.

I’ve never dared to do anything outrageous before and lived my life quietly yet it only lead to something more dreadful. I sped up as the forest started coming to an end.

Leaving this space, this forest boundary, will make me a rogue but that didn’t stop me. I felt my heart pound like crazy in my chest. It was beating so hard I could feel it drum in my ears even though I was busy running.

I don’t know what it was, this feeling, but there was a sense of fear and excitement mixed in.

The trees started getting less dense and I started feeling a weird sensation take over me, like a sense of relief when I heard something.

Something was moving behind me.

I felt my world slow down even though I didn’t decrease the speed with which I was running. It was just my brain entering an alarmed state and processing faster. I looked in the direction of the rustling bushes and immediately knew something was coming toward me.

Fear alerted my mind even more and I knew I was in trouble but I was already running full speed ahead yet whatever was coming to hunt me was faster. Way faster than any werewolf I’ve known. I hadn’t felt the presence until a moment ago, so it can only mean that whatever it is, is insanely fast.

I gritted my teeth and looked ahead. I was almost out of the forest, I was almost there.

The trees were almost gone and I could now see the road passing by the forest line right ahead of me.

But right behind me, I heard the thumping of feet followed by a low growl

No!

I tried running faster but a person has their limits. In a desperate attempt to make it out of the pack’s vicinity, I extended my hand outward but before I could actually manage to escape, something jumped out of the dark forest from my left side.

I barely got to turn my head to look at it before I was violently tackled down.

We went rolling out of the forest and made it to the last strand of trees where I was pinned on the grass. Having just been attacked like that made me dizzy and it took me a moment before I got my senses back and the pain seeped in.

I heard a growl and then opened my eyes to see what was on top of me.

My eyes went wide at the discovery.

It was a Lycan and I had no idea Lycans were so huge.

“Egon,” I looked into his eyes while he stared back in confusion.

“What do you think you’re doing?” He looked at the road which was right next to us now, “You’re out of the pack’s area.”

“....” He had his paws pinned on my wrists and they hurt under his weight. In a distance, I heard a vehicle approach us, it was probably a late-night traveler. The car passed by us in a jiffy but I refused to answer him.

“Speak,” He growled.

I didn’t

We were out of the dense forest, so I could clearly see his features. His Lycan was dark as the night, his fur could perfectly blend in with any type of darkness.

“Portia,” He called my name, and the moment he did I felt my wolf again, “Speak,” He looked directly into my eyes making me nervous, “What are you doing here?”

I gritted my teeth.

This was infuriating.

I can’t believe I’m still so attracted to him. All he did was call my name! And my wolf is going crazy.

“Portia,” He moved his face closer and I felt his nose brush against mine. The action made my body jolt in glee but my mind wasn’t having it.

“You don’t want me,” I said as I choked back the tears that wanted to come out again with the emotions. I glared at him, “And you’re going to give me away to someone else.”

He paused, “I have my reasons,” He said, “I-”

“I hate you,” I didn’t mean those words, I only said them because I was hurt, “Why did you have to be my mate?!” I held my tears back and continued to glare at him.

He was stunned by my words, then he got angry, “So, you plan to run away?!” He growled at me, “You want to be a rogue?”

“Yeah!” I screamed at him, “It’s a thousand times better than staying here and destroying myself!!”

He growled at me making me shut up, “Listen to me,”

“No!” I yelled and then started screaming, “I hate you!! Let me go!!!” I screamed again, completely forgetting the fact that someone could hear me and I might just be creating more trouble for myself.

Egon removed his paw and pressed it on my mouth to shut me up, “Portia, listen-” But he didn’t get to speak as the deafening sound of a gunshot startled both of us. We both turned our heads to look at the road.

There was a human male, in his late forties, there with a rifle in his hands. He tried to make an observation but I guess it was a bit dark for a human to see completely and Egon and I weren’t completely in the open, just by the edge of the forest.

But this was a chance.

I flailed my free arm for help and the man noticed. He aimed toward Egon and fired. The impact of the bullet made him fall off of me and I wasted no time in standing up and running toward the man.

The man then fired three more times and the moment I crossed him to run toward the road he ran after me.

The bullet that was fired would have no critical damage to a Lycan but it can still buy us time.

I saw his car parked a little ahead on the road and we ran to it. He sat in the driver’s seat and I took my place right beside him on the passenger seat. We slammed the doors and he locked the car that was already on.

I looked behind us and saw Egon come onto the road.

I knew it. Normal bullets wouldn’t do much damage to a Lycan. I saw the streak of blood that was flowing down from his side but otherwise, he was fine.

“Holy hell.” The man slammed on the accelerator, “What in the seven hells is that!?” I could sense the fear in his voice

I looked straight ahead and sunk low in my seat in stress, then glanced at the rearview mirror that now showed a clear road behind us.

Egon had left and he didn’t follow us.

I gulped, took a breath of relief, and then answered.

“I have no idea.”
