She tried to refocus them and block out that terrifying vision, but Anna felt like her eyes were much too big for her face.

"Are you in pain?"

Then she heard David's voice—deep, dark, and throbbing—and saw his anxious face—every line etched with worry. His eyes nearly black as he tried to see through the mask she had worn.

“Anna.”

She blinked once or twice before she was brought back to the present as his fingers delicately touched both cheeks.

"I'm—fine," she stammered, her voice barely audible due to her shaking lips. She looked directly into his intense eyes and forced herself to swallow the quick knot that appeared in her throat. With trembling hands, she reassured him, "Really," fending off the inquisitive gaze that seemed to attack her very being.

“You were aware of the incident.” Instead of a question, it was a statement.

“Every cent?”

For some reason, her lips felt unusually parched, so she stuck out her tongue to dab them.
