Job Hunt

Mike entered the kitchen, gasping for air, only to find Emma joyfully dancing to her headphones. He took a deep breath and embraced her tightly , gently rubbing his fingers through her hair.

“What happened?” Emma asked, in shock, but Mike simply shook his head.

“Alright, go and take a shower. Your are sweating a lot. Dinner will be ready soon.”

Mike quietly retreated to his room, feeling a sense of relief after seeing Emma, yet still tense from the phone call.

 **********

Emma and her husband found a moment of tranquility as they sat together, engaged in a casual conversation.

“I want to look for a job, I’m tired of not doing anything” Emma said holding Mike’s hand.

Without uttering a single word, Mike cleared his throat “I’m going to get some water” he said as he made his way towards the kitchen. After removing the bottle of water and closing the refrigerator door, Mike deliberately turned his eyes when he sighted Emma standing at the entrance of the Kitchen. He pretended not to see her, concentrating instead on the bottle water he was holding.

“I want to look for a job.” Emma repeated

“Why do you want to look for a job. I can take care of us.” Mike reassured her.

“I’m tired of doing nothing. I want a job and besides I also want to be contributing in this house.”

“But you don’t need to worry about  that.” He reassured her, “You are not in the right frame of mind to work. What about your condition”

“I have a degree and I’m a fast learner. I believe nowadays  companies provide training when you start, so it won’t be overwhelming for me.”

“I don’t just  want you to be stressed.”

“I promise, It won’t be stressful for me and I also want  to assist in the bill.”

Mike hesitated for a moment, then nodded. “If that’s what will make you happy then I support you.  Yes she said jumping on him, planting a kiss on his cheek. “As we speak I have already applied for a job. I have an interview in the next two hours. I just wanted your approval.”

She quickly rushed inside her to change. Putting on a white long sleeve dress and a loafers shoe. She stepped  out of the house and boarded a car. Emma’s heart raced as she entered into the office building, her steps echoing in the grand lobby. The atmosphere was professional with silk glass walls and modern artwork adorning the walls.

As she made her way to the designated fall, Emma couldn’t help but felt nervous. The office was a hive of activities with employees focused on their tasks, their keyboards clicking rhythmically. Emma was guided to a cozy waiting area, furnished with comfortable chairs and a coffee tables sacked with magazines. She took a seat, her palms slightly sweaty as she reviewed her CV one last time.

Finally, the door to the interview room opened revealing a poised and confident Lady. The lady,  Ms. Anderson, greeted Emma warmly, her smile putting Emma at ease. The room itself exuded professionalism, with a large glass desk and shelves filled with neatly organized files and books. The walls were adorned with framed certificates showcasing the company’s achievements.

As they began the interview Emma greeted, "Good day ma’am. I’m here for….”

“I know why you are here,”  Ms. Anderson interrupted. “Let’s just go straight to the point. Give me your CV.”

Emma handled over her well-prepared CV. The room fell silent as Ms. Anderson carefully reviewed the CV. Emma clenched and unclenched her fist under the table, she felt her anxiety grew more by the minute. Finally breaking the silent, Ms Anderson spoke,

“Your achievements are quite impressive but I noticed you haven’t been employed for while now. Could you please explain the  reason for a gap in your employment history?”

“I had an accident that put me in a coma and caused a head injury, resulting in an amnesia and prevented me from  being able to work. At the moment I’m doing well and I’m fit to work.” Emma explained.

“Well, your achievements are quite impressive but regrettably, I don’t believe you possess the necessary qualification for the job.”  Ms Anderson said as she handed over Emma’s CV to her.

"But I C-Can…. Before Emma could finish her sentence, Ms Anderson abruptly interrupted, “I’m sorry, you are not what this company needs.”

With a heavy heart, Emma  clutched her CV tightly. Slowly, she walked towards the door, and then with a final glance back at  Ms Anderson she mustard courage to ask, her voice shaking “if you don’t mind, could you please tell me why you are denying me this opportunity?”

“Well, just so you know, this company is looking for someone who can keep up with the pace. Unfortunately due to your amnesia it will be hard for you. We can’t offer you the job.” Ms Anderson explained.

“I’m a fast learner. I promise if you train me, I can catch up quickly.” Emma said trying to persuade her.

“I’m sorry, like I said you are just not what this company needs.”

Emma walked out of the company trying not to cry. Tears welled up in her eyes as she boarded a taxi and made her way home. Upon entering the house, She saw her husband, who could sense her sadness in an instant. With a gentle stride, Mike approached her as she sank into the sofa. He sat close to her and wrapped his arms around her.

“What’s troubling you?” Mike asked.

Overwhelmed by her emotions,  Emma began to cry, “I’m never going to get a job.” She said as her tears flowed freely.

“Seems like your interview didn’t go so well.” He said as he gave her a comforting pat on the head and consoled her.

“I was turned down for the job just because of my amnesia. I assured them I won’t be incompetent. I promised to learn quickly and work hard, still I was turned down.” She explained sobbing.

“Don’t cry everything will be fine.” Mike said. He gently lifted her in his arms and carried her to her bedroom.

“Freshen up.” He said, As he gently placed her on the bed.

As she freshened up, he immediately went to the kitchen and made a warm cup of milk for her. He headed back to the room.

“Here, Drink this” as he handed it to her.

Mike sat besides her softly running his fingers through her hair, while he watched her drift off to sleep. He walked out of the room,  gently closing the door behind him. Seeing Emma cried made him sad and furious. Mike picked up his phone and dialed a number.

“Hello, This is Mike Williams. He said with a deep voice.

“Mr Mike Williams sir, what can we do for you?” the person on the other end responded.

“Today, a certain lady came looking for a job in the company and she was denied the job.”

“Sir please what’s the name of the lady.”

“Her name is Emma and I want you to offer her the job she applied for.”

"Consider it done sir.” He ended the call.
