"Am I allowed to ask about the plans? Or is that pack exclusive knowledge? I have been looking forward to my baby sister's wedding for a long time." Isaac asked, trying to keep his tone joking. "You'll be joining that pack soon enough, Isaac," said Mr. Brogan. "But typically we let the women prepare on their own. You'll be helping Marco and me with his side of affairs. "Lavinia glanced at Isaac out of the corner of her eye, uncomfortable with Mr. Brogan's separation. Simply based on how Sonia and Arabella held back in the conversation she could sense that there was a clear power dynamic at work. Mr. Brogan and Marco held something over the two girls and they expected Lavinia and Isaac to fall in line. Isaac smiled flatly. "I'm sure I can make myself useful.""Then I can take your maidservant!" Said Sonia. "Arabella will only give me so much gossip. You can fill in the gaps for me.""There's not a lot to tell," Lavinia started, trying to shift Sonia off the subject.
Lavinia had hoped that preparations for Marco and Arabella's ceremony would feel like a point of normalcy. She thought that surely the process could not be that different from events she had been to in the past. Mr. Brogan seemed to be treating the whole affair like a wedding. But nothing could have been farther from the truth.Sonia's event planning was unlike anything Lavinia had ever seen. Instead of choosing decorations and matching centerpieces, she bound herbs and lit candles, guiding Arabella and Lavinia through the motions. That afternoon she led them into the surrounding forest. Lavinia had never seen woods like these. In the confines of the city, there was almost no plant life. It was only near Astor manor that she had ever seen any density of plant life. This area was something entirely new. Trees grew wide and tall, their roots overlapping in a matted tangle on the forest floor, overrun with ferns and thick patches of leafy shrubs that Lavinia could not identify.
Sonia's messy hair flattened back against her neck, getting shorter. Her fringe grew forward, becoming a coarse layer of hair over her snarling face. Yellow irises blossomed, the color overtaking her eyes and blocking out their whites. With a sickening crunch, her limbs elongated. She became taller, hunching forward as her ankles bent and her knees became stiff. Her hands hit the ground as enormous russet paws. Arabella pushed Lavinia behind her, changing her own stance into a partial crouch. She bared her fangs as Sonia's mouth solidified into a snarling muzzle. She had completely transformed. Sonia paced in front of them, a huge red wolf. Even on four paws, she was taller than Arabella. She inched closer to them, not taking her eyes off of Lavinia. "Easy, Sonia," Arabella warned. "I don't want to hurt you.""Like you even could," growled Sonia. "You vampires like to think you have so much power. You're just the fastest to infiltrate and feed off of the competit
"What do you mean?" Sonia asked. "Of course he's your mate. That's why you're here."Lavinia wanted to retreat, to find a way to change the subject and forget the whole thing. If Sonia found out she and Isaac were not there to celebrate, she could tell Marco and they would never be able to get Arabella free. But at this point, they had said too much. Lavinia looked at Arabella waiting for her to say something first."Marco wants me to be his mate," Arabella said slowly. "I don't know if he feels something instinctually or if he just made a decision.""He must feel something," Sonia persisted. "This is one of our most sacred rituals. You can't just claim that someone is your mate. Are you sure you don't-""I don't feel anything," Arabella dropped all pretense. "I didn't want to come here with him. He took me from Astor Manor. Threatened me with-""Marco wouldn't do that. He isn't that sort of person.""Sonia, that's why Isaac and I came," Lavinia siad. "We came here to r
Returning to the castle, Lavinia retreated upstairs to her shared bedroom with Isaac. It struck her in that moment: the irony that they only were able to sleep as a pair in enemy territory. When she opened the door she saw Isaac was already there, asleep on top of the comforter. She paused for a second, watching his chest rise and fall peacefully. All her stress from the moment before subsided as she watched Isaac sleep. The panic and urgency that had risen in her chest from talking to Sonia seemed less material now. She sat down on the side of the bed and reached to gently touch Isaac's hands. He stirred slightly, returning her grip, but did not wake up. Lavinia smiled, leaning down to brush Isaac's hair out of his face. He shifted, turning onto his side, his momentum pulling Lavinia with him. Curling around her, his hands unconsciously circled her waist. Lavinia sighed lightly as Isaac pressed his face against the back of her neck. She knew she needed to talk to him,
Arabella stood on a platform, staring at herself in a full-length mirror. At her feet, an older stooped woman fussed with the hem of her gown which extended into a long train that reached as far back as the low sofa behind her. On the sofa sat Sonia and Lavinia, the former leaning forward impatiently."I don't see why you need a dress," Sonia complained."Look, if I have to suffer a whole ceremony, I'm at least going to look good doing it," Arabella snapped."Our ritual robes are perfectly fine.""I feel like I should be allowed to add my culture into the process.""Wanting a new gown isn't culture."Lavinia rolled her eyes. "For Arabella, it's almost a religion. Did I tell you what she was like leading up to Isaac's Ball?""No, you neglected to entertain me with that one," Sonia said.Laughing, Lavinia started to describe how Arabella approached her makeover with no small amount of schadenfreude. She talked about the previous fitting she had gone to and how Arabella had i
Arabella finally settled on a dress with a tightly fitted bodice and a loose skirt. She spent a long time in front of the mirror, reveling in the light sensation of a skirt with no hoop and only a thin crinoline. She experimentally moved her legs, making sure she retained her full range of motion. "Sonia, could you come here for a second?" She asked.Uncertainly, Sonia stood and approached Arabella on the short platform. Arabella held out her hand. Sonia took it, bracing herself to help Arabella down. "All right. Are you ready?" Arabella said with a smile."Ready for wh-"Arabella seized Sonia's upper arm and jerked her forward, flipping Sonia onto her back. "What the hell, Arabella?" Sonia shouted, jumping back to her feet and rounding on the shorter girl. "Just making sure I haven't lost my edge," Arabella said. "I didn't hurt you, did I?"Sonia paused for a second, looking carefully down at Arabella. She rolled her shoulders. "No, you didn't. But I expect a
The morning of the ceremony was bright and clear. The sky was nearly cloudless, just thin whisps of clouds hanging like strings across the blue expanse. It felt almost ironic. Lavinia could feel the weight of the plan ahead of her pressing hard on her shoulders, but the day itself seemed entirely open. Isaac joined her at the window. Had they been at the manor, he would have suggested a walk. But today wasn't about that.As the two of them dressed, they thought only of the struggle ahead. Isaac took off the silver ring he wore on his right hand and threaded it through a ribbon. He tied it around Lavinia's neck. "Keep it tucked under your gown.""Will that actually work?"Isaac shrugged. "It will be better than nothing. And in all the days we've spent here I have not seen a single member of the pack wear silver. Even their tableware is made of a different metal."Lavinia touched the ring. It was far too large for any of her fingers. It was an element solely for protecti
