Lavinia had hoped that preparations for Marco and Arabella's ceremony would feel like a point of normalcy. She thought that surely the process could not be that different from events she had been to in the past. Mr. Brogan seemed to be treating the whole affair like a wedding. But nothing could have been farther from the truth.Sonia's event planning was unlike anything Lavinia had ever seen. Instead of choosing decorations and matching centerpieces, she bound herbs and lit candles, guiding Arabella and Lavinia through the motions. That afternoon she led them into the surrounding forest. Lavinia had never seen woods like these. In the confines of the city, there was almost no plant life. It was only near Astor manor that she had ever seen any density of plant life. This area was something entirely new. Trees grew wide and tall, their roots overlapping in a matted tangle on the forest floor, overrun with ferns and thick patches of leafy shrubs that Lavinia could not identify.

Sonia's messy hair flattened back against her neck, getting shorter. Her fringe grew forward, becoming a coarse layer of hair over her snarling face. Yellow irises blossomed, the color overtaking her eyes and blocking out their whites. With a sickening crunch, her limbs elongated. She became taller, hunching forward as her ankles bent and her knees became stiff. Her hands hit the ground as enormous russet paws. Arabella pushed Lavinia behind her, changing her own stance into a partial crouch. She bared her fangs as Sonia's mouth solidified into a snarling muzzle. She had completely transformed. Returning to the castle, Lavinia retreated upstairs to her shared bedroom with Isaac. It struck her in that moment: the irony that they only were able to sleep as a pair in enemy territory. When she opened the door she saw Isaac was already there, asleep on top of the comforter. She paused for a second, watching his chest rise and fall peacefully. All her stress from the moment before subsided as she watched Isaac sleep. The panic and urgency that had risen in her chest from talking to Sonia seemed less material now. She sat down on the side of the bed and reached to gently touch Isaac's hands. He stirred slightly, returning her grip, but did not wake up. Lavinia smiled, leaning down to brush Isaac's hair out of his face. He shifted, turning onto his side, his momentum pulling Lavinia with him. Arabella stood on a platform, staring at herself in a full-length mirror. At her feet, an older stooped woman fussed with the hem of her gown which extended into a long train that reached as far back as the low sofa behind her.
