Some Time

Chase and I went to the kitchen for something small to eat.

I pushed my food around on my plate, not really feeling very hungry anymore. I just felt sad for Chase.

“Lyse? What’s going on in that head of yours?”, he asked, gazing at me, his fingers brushing mine across the table.

I sighed. “I just feel so bad, Chase. I feel like it’s my fault that your mom isn’t here with you and your dad.”, I said, looking into his eyes.

“Lyse. My mom died in part, for me. She knew that your survival was paramount both to our kind, and to me.”, he said, sincerity in his face as he squeezed my hand.

I smiled a small smile. “I wish that I could remember her, especially since she was my mom’s best friend. I’m sure they had a lot of stories to tell.”

He smiled, the corners of his eyes crinkling. “I’m sure they did. My mom would have loved you, Lyse. She did love you.”

I got up from the table, needing the fresh air that the outdoors brought.
