Chapter 6

Perhaps I was going to be the death of these Alphas too. In the midst of fangs tearing into hide, my climax coated the air, causing the mateless wolves in the room into a frenzied state. Suddenly, I had two pairs of glowing eyes locked on me. I wondered if their animalistic need to mate would take control and override their need to fight. With their wolfs in control, which instinct would win?

The wolf with fur of black, let out a growl of a different tone altogether, but it was Alpha Grey that prowled closer to me, his nostrils flared taking in large whiffs of my moist heat. He appeared to be the younger of the Alphas, perhaps also less experienced, and the most affected by my surge of come. His wolfskin showed more signs of injury, blood adorned his pelt, but he’d kept the older wolf from his neck and held his own so far into this wolf fight.

However, the dark wolf wore a smile of blood coating his teeth and muzzle. His bites were calculated, vicious, swift, and his claws slashed true and deep. The smaller wolf’s attacks were more on the defensive as his opponent was relentless and brutal. There was nothing human remaining in the dark wolf’s eyes as his enemy’s blood hung thick in the air. As he tasted it on his tongue and demanded more.

A wolf’s neck was its weak spot, and something told me if Alpha Roam got his enemy’s neck in his jaws, he’d show no mercy. This was not just a fight to submission; one wolf would not survive this battle. Too much bad blood, too many years of discord and disrespect, and acts of war had occurred between these rival packs. This was about honor and both of the Alphas were too full of stubborn pride to back down or surrender to their enemy.

The grey Alpha and his primal urge to mount me, overrode his survival instincts for just the blink of an eye, and his distraction cost him. As he was overcome by his feral need to fuck the aroused female, the dark wolf seized the advantage. His jaws clamped down around the younger Alpha’s throat. If he managed to get his fangs just a bit lower, it would all come to a bloody end.

Lily saw the precarious position her Alpha was in. She screamed a sound I’ll never forget, something not quite human or animal. Rand held her close and pulled her back as Alpha Grey fought with all he had to break free from the dark wolf’s locked jaws.

“He’s going to kill him! He’s going to kill my brother! Moon Help him! Someone help him! This is all my fault! He’s all I have left! Grey!” she sobbed.

Oh fuck me on a Monday, Alpha Grey was Lily’s brother? It explained the informal way she’d addressed him. And her devastation when her Alpha was injured and clearly losing the fight. A fight that had taken place because she and her mate from a rival pack had decided to run away together.

It wasn’t the way of wolves to interfere in a challenge between Alphas especially. It was viewed as a great dishonor, the penalty could be of banishment, losing pack rank, or even death. But I had never liked to play by the rules, and especially those of the wolves. I was not one of them in the ways that mattered most. Fuck their stupid, ancient law! Besides, this was my territory, my laws, and they had no right to spill blood on my land. Enough blood had been spilled here already, my own had soaked this ground in far too many places. Enough was enough. This ended now.

I lifted my shotgun into the air and fired off a round. I cringed when I hit a light and the bulb shattered, glass raining down, but it was the least of what was already broken in this place.  Wood and porcelain littered the floor, and blood painted the tile crimson. But Alpha Roam didn’t so much as flinch at the sound and Alpha Grey was all but paralyzed in his grip, if he made the wrong move, his throat would be torn out.

“Enough!” I demanded, “As Alpha of this…Mountainshadow lands, I order this to stop. Enough blood has been spilled. Let him go!”

The dark wolf growled; the sound rumbled around the fur of the wolf trapped in his maws. If anything, he bit down harder, and a whimper escaped from the grey wolf. I was using words and reason, the language the animal Alpha Roam didn’t understand. To get the beast to listen, I had to speak his language of violence and pain. The brute had left me little choice, as Lily’s wails, and Randon trying to shield his true mate’s eyes from watching her brother about to be torn to shreds, only strengthened my resolve.

I raised Old Faithful once more and took aim. I shot the Alpha of Stonemountain Pack. My first hit wasn’t a kill shot as I clipped his right front leg. I tried to avoid puncturing anything vital or any place that would leave him crippled. A crippled Alpha was a dead Alpha, and any wounds I gave him that wouldn’t heal properly, would be signing his death warrant. Wolves lied in wait for their Alphas to be weakened in some way to make their moves to replace them. My first shotgun shell to the dark wolf was a warning. And there would only be one warning.

The beast howled in pain and rage as pellets dipped in wolfsbane bit into his hide.  Though wolf’s skin was thicker than human, it wasn’t impenetrable. The stubborn bastard still didn’t let go. He had something to prove, even if it cost him his life. It looked like I was going to have to kill the dark wolf to get him to relinquish his prey.

I let out a deep breath, “The next one will go right through that thick skull of yours, Alpha Roam. This is your final warning to let him go and get the fuck off my land. You can die an idiot and leave your pack to fend for themselves.  Or you can live to fight another day. The choice is yours.”

My finger was on the trigger, I began to squeeze it slowly. I could hear my own blood pounding in my ears. Killing an Alpha would likely bring me some repercussions, even though it was my land and neutral ground. Not all wolves respected the laws. And if they learned I’d killed their Alpha in dishonor during a challenge, they would likely be out for my blood. Or to seek their revenge by claiming me for the Stonemountain Pack and force me into a life of rape and abuse as a pack breeder. But it was a risk I was willing to take, and I would cross that bridge when I came to it. This was my home and how dare they disrespect it and me!

But tenacious and prideful to the last, Alpha Roam seemed more likely to crush his enemy’s neck, as his final act on this side, rather than back down from this fight. I understood him more in that moment. I could fill him full of wolfsbane bullets or put one through his skull and he would still take the other Alpha with him to the spirit world. His imminent death was not enough of a threat to stop him. I doubted The Moon itself could stop him in this moment. So now I would just have to call upon a more basic instinct than his own survival.

An Alpha’s purpose was not to just lead, it was also to protect. Protect those weaker than himself, keep his pack safe. I turned my gun and aimed it at Randon’s heart. The look of betrayal in the young beta’s eyes was sharp enough to cut me. Lily screeched again and tried unsuccessfully to place herself in-between my gun and her mate, but Rand was too strong to let her get the upper hand.

Lily’s grey eyes raged like a stormy sea, “How could you, you bitch!”

The docile little she-wolf now looked feral enough to rip me apart. No one made a direct threat against her mate or her claws came out. But I steeled myself.

“You may not care about your own sorry hide, but what about his? What about the life of your nephew, Alpha Roam?” I challenged.

I prayed to God, The Moon and any other higher power that was listening that this would work, that the dark wolf wouldn’t call my bluff. Or that I really wouldn’t have to shoot Lily’s mate to get my point across.

Now the dark Alpha and I were locked in a battle of wills of our own.
