36. DAISY

“There’s someone at the door, Val.”

There was a loud thud, followed by curses. “Do you have the iPad? Are you checking the camera?”

I nodded, clutching the tablet tighter as I stared down at the man standing outside the door.

“It’s a m-man,” I whispered as if he could hear me. “He’s wearing a cap and a black hoodie. He rang the bell but hasn’t looked at the camera.”

“Okay, where are you?” he asked.

“I-In Alex’s office.” I licked my lips. “Elias placed the tablet on charge in the office before he left.”

“Where is he?”

The man moved, snapping my attention towards the screen again. He pulled something out of his pocket and slid it under the door. For a few seconds, he remained in the same position, ear almost pressed to the door.

“Daisy?”

“He pushed something under the door.”

“Did you see what it is?” There was a strange note to his voice.

“L-looks like an envelope.”

“Where’s Elias, petal?” he repeated his question.

“H-he went out to…to…I can’t remember.”

Val cursed under his brea
