Chapter 86

Selena's POV

I felt awful. It was completely unfair, but what happened Saturday night was terrifying and beyond my control. I woke up in the middle of the night, startled by the frantic cries of the baby monitor beside my bed.

"Jada!" I cried, rushing to their room in my nightgown. It wasn't far, but every second felt like an eternity. When I burst in, Sophia was already there, trying to soothe a wailing Jada.

"What's wrong, darling?" I asked, my voice thick with worry.

"Mummy!" Jada cried, her eyes squeezed shut.

Soon enough, Jadon started crying too, likely woken by his sister's distress.

"Give her to me," I said to Sophia, who gently passed Jada over. Sophia scooped up a now-crying Jadon, attempting to calm him down.

"What's wrong, baby?" I whispered to Jada, but she just clung to me, burying her hot face in my neck. Panicked, I felt her temperature – it was burning up.

Rushing out of the room, I stopped in front of Gracie's room and started banging on the door.
