CHAPTER NINE

Kaia wasn’t sure what had woken her up. She just knew that she was lying on her side, sheets tangled at her feet.

Something told her not to open her eyes, so she didn’t. She listened, straining her ears, unsure and anxious, goosebumps running down her arms.

It was still night: she could hear an owl hooting in the distance, an eerie sound that made the hair on the back of her neck stand up. But there was something else. Someone else.

There. The barely audible sound of breathing.

Keeping her own breathing calm and even, Kaia slightly opened an eye. She had left the bedside lamp on when she’d gone to sleep, so she had no trouble seeing her surroundings. Except whoever was in the room with her—and she knew who it was—Eton Domino was standing on the other side of the bed and Kaia's back was turned to him.

Then, she became aware of something else. Her shirt had ridden up, leaving her ass and legs completely exposed to Eton's eyes. Kaia's first urge was to yank the shirt down, but if she did
