My phone chimed. When I realized it was no longer in my pocket but on the console table right next to Curtis, my heart skipped a beat. I didn’t have a passcode. If Curtis wanted to pass my phone to me, he was going to see my text message without even trying to. I didn’t have any privacy settings, majorly because I didn’t feel the need to. But remembering that the only person who would send me a text message had to be Spider, I swallowed a hard lump.

What I was dreading was exactly what happened. Curtis grabbed my phone and passed it over to me. He wasn’t trying to find out who the text was from but he did anyway. My tiny hope that it was a weather update flew out the window when he chuckled. “What kind of name is Spider?”

“A nickname.” I forced a grin.

“It’s insane. And that, is coming from the owner of a strip club.”

I grabbed my phone from him and let out a sigh of relief. Spider had sent a random rant that had nothing to do with Curtis. I would be dead if the text was a
