Chapter Eighteen

Making each other look good.

I rest all morning but by midday I was hungry and bored. Not a good combination. With Blake’s support I managed to hop into the canteen at lunchtime. Yet again, all eyes on me as I enter the room but this time they all cheer and clap at me. My face burns red from the attention and I quickly join the lunch queue to pick out my meal.

The kitchen staff kindly placed my lunch into a bag rather than even let me attempt to carry a tray. My favourite empty table was available and as I headed over to it, I suddenly stopped and turned.

He was watching my every move.

As my eyes met Spike’s, I hobbled over to his table. Having spent the morning thinking about what I want to do when I saw him, I was expecting it to be difficult and require strength. But now that I was here, it felt natural.

“Thank you!” I said to him.

“What for?” He looks up at me with narrow eyes, still holding the attitude. I’ll offer the olive branch and he can take time to consider it.
