Lauren opens her mouth and makes a move to bite the spot on my neck that would indicate that I am marked, and a jolt of fear immediately rakes through my body and makes me stand up without pushing her off me.

She falls to the carpeted floor with a muffled thud, and immediately I get horrified of what I just did. She looks up at me with a scared expression, and my heart constricts.

“I’m sorry,” I whisper, reaching out to help her up. I carry her in my arms and gently put her back on her bed. “I just . . . I don’t want to mate. At least not yet.”

I sigh, then I look up. Something catches my eye on the side of her bed.
