CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND ONE

ABSTINENCE

Lara arrived home and felt afraid of being alone. She didn't avoid her neighbour this time and when she unlocked the gate, the woman's light turned on almost instantly. Lara waited for the woman to go out into the shared yard.

"Good evening, Lara. How are you?" asked Márcia.

"Well, Márcia. And you?" replied Lara.

"The same. Do you remember Father Cleiton? He finally showed up last week," said Márcia.

Lara unlocked her door, trying to remember the subject the woman had previously mentioned.

"Oh, that's good news," she commented, hoping it was the right answer.

"Yeah, he said that Marília should stay single unless she goes back to her husband. It wasn't adultery, right? So, she either stays alone or goes back to him," explained Márcia.

Lara couldn't remember who Marília was or what they were talking about.

"Do you want to come in?" Lara invited her in, and Márcia didn't waste time entering before Lara changed her mind.

"Were you working?" Márcia asked, sitting at the kitchen
