I sat down on the couch before Prince Bruess. I held out my hand, and the white finch flitted down to my fingers.

“It’s not afraid at all,” I said in surprise.

“She. Her name is Pearl,” Prince Bruess corrected me. His voice was the very essence of serenity, and his eyes took on a darker, burnished color of red. His languid position on the couch reminded me so much of Prince Legiere, that I couldn’t help but smile.

He watched me. “Have I amused you in some way?” There was no malice in his questioning; he appeared genuinely curious.

“You look alike,” I said. I quickly added, “If that is not offensive to say to you.”

He gave a small smile, and I noticed how his face had slight scars along his nose and jaw – the places where the muzzle must have hung heaviest on his skin. “Not at all,” he replied. “We are brothers, after all. We shared the same sire. Arinauld of House Legiere.”
