Chapter 22

“No it’s fine. You are right. You treat me like I exist. Sometimes my husband does not. You also treat me like I am not property.” There was a long pause she continued. “The trip was a nightmare after you left. He made me make amends with Mr. Alvarez. Then he proceeded to assist the authorities in his arrest. He used me as a pawn. My own husband. You may not know this, but I was born in a small southern backwoods town. My daddy was a coal miner and my momma was a seamstress. We didn’t have much when I grew up, except our word. I’m noticing more and more everyday his word isn’t  meaning much. He lies to me…” She trailed off. “So I say all of that to say, thank you for treating me with kindness.”

“Mrs. King this is none of my business, but I do want you to know that if you ever need me in any way I’m here for you.”
