CHAPTER 15
Shouts erupted at the table. A few slammed their hands on the table in disbelief. I heard things like: a halfbreed for queen? Others called me a common slave. Thane raised his palm and the table quietened.
"That is unacceptable" a man with white hair shouted. All eyes were on me. Some with happiness, some with hate and some expressionless. Thane wiped his mouth gently with a napkin.
"Is that a challenge?"
"Not at all my king."
"Then seat Anstice." The elderly man begrudgingly sat. The meal continued in silence after that. I felt a few people glare at me but I didn't look up. I focused on my plate ignoring them and yet unable to stomach anything.
"Eat" I looked at him and back at the plate immediately. I managed spoonfuls and quietly excused myself from the table.

Two days had gone by since the challenge was issued. I hadn't left my room in those two days and nobody had come to check up on me. There was a dull ache in my abdomen today and I felt a bit feverish. The door lock clicked and the door was pushed open. Jairus entered with a smile on his face."You haven't come out for two days""What's the point?" he sat on my bed."The duel is in two weeks""Why is it far away?""So you have time to prepare""There's no point. One week, three months, the result will still be the same. Gardenia will best me. I'm not about to prepare just to die."

I woke up feeling exhausted. There was a mild burning between my legs and if it wasn't quenched, it would turn into an inferno. I reached for Thane but his spot was empty. I felt guilty for keeping him awake all through the night.I woke up with intense burnings between my legs during the night and he helped me relieve my ache each time I reached for him.He stepped out of the bathroom, a towel hung low on his hips. Training with Eridian had been going well. I learnt a few tricks from him but I was yet to beat him. His speed and strength gave him an edge over me. Each time I whined, he reminded me Gardenia would be fighting for my submission. The contest had been moved to the end of the month so, I had a lot of time to practice.Archery had been the worst during my training. I was barely able to hold the bow properly much less hitting the bulls eye. I needed to be good at atleast one activity. Don't get me started on hunting. I was too noisy to catch a damn rabbit. I couldn't move stealthily like Eridian or Jairus. The rabbit always spotted me before I could make a kill. The week for the challenge had finally reached. The first activity was a race. We were given a starting point in the forest and clues to find our way to the finish line. I was currently standing in the forest with Gardenia who had a smug look on her face.I wondered why the fight was prolonged. They were just extending my humiliation. Jairus explained to me that the sword fighting was the most important part. The other games were just to keep the people entertained and have a build up until the final day. I pulled on my leather pants and sports bra and headed downstairs. Today was for hunting. I had lost the first game to Gardenia. I walked downstairs nonchalantly and into the open field where the audience and spectators had gathered.Thane sat in his throne, Jairus on his left. The throne on the right was empty. The rules for the second game was stated out. Two hours to hunt. The one with the most kill wins the round. I donned my white dress angrily. I suddenly felt like I was entertainment for the guests. Why did they have to add these games. We could have just had the goddamned sword fighting and let it end there.As I was walking, I bumped into a guard. I jerked upright at the sound of my name. My head hurt badly and my heart was pounding in my chest. I looked around expecting to see the angry mob. My eyes met green orbs filled with... My body ached as I turned over. I pushed myself up and rested against the headboard."Lay back. You're not fully healed" I turned and saw Thane seating on the recliner. I took in my surroundings and saw I was in his room."Water" I croaked. My throat felt dry and I wondered how long I was out if it. I looked at my dress and saw I had been changed into a light dress and my injuries were cleaned up.He held the cup to my mouth and I took small sips. I drank about half of the glass and I gently pushed his hands away. He placed the glass on the table and arranged pillows at my back."How long was I out?""Six hours" I nodded. His eyes rolled in the back of his head. He grunted and stood up.
